Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette is a well-equipped, luxury, front-drive minivan that’s available only in extended-body form. When all is said and done, it really is one of the most versatile and well-equipped models available in its segment of the market.

The Range

Body Styles: minivan
Engines: 3.4-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Oldsmobile Silhouette GL, Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS, Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere

What's New

The 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette includes a style refresh as well as the addition of a touring suspension package with a self-leveling feature and an air inflation kit. Sound deadening has also been improved, OnStar has been made standard, and the second-row captain’s chairs now fold flat. Changes made to the top trim GLS and Premiere models include the addition of two-toned leather seating, rear parking sensors, an integrated universal garage door opener, 16-inch wheels, a power sliding driver’s door, third-row captain’s chairs, a dash-mounted CD player, standard or optional dual-zone air-conditioning, and eight-way power seats.

Exterior

The 2001 Silhouette is larger than the Dodge Grand Caravan and features a swing-up rear liftgate and dual sliding doors. It has a 120-inch wheelbase and a length that measures 201.4 inches total. The GLS and Premiere models feature a power-operated door on the passenger side that’s available as an option on the GL. The GLS and Premiere models also feature 16-inch wheels, while GL models have 15-inch wheels.

Interior

The 2001Oldsmobile Silhouette seats six or seven, depending on the seating configuration. Front seats are bucket, second-row seating consists of captain’s chairs, and third row seating is a three-passenger bench, stowable bench seats, or additional captain’s chairs. Second and third-row seating can be removed to maximize cargo capacity. All models feature dash-mounted cup holders and there is also the option for an in-dash six-CD stereo. The base model GL includes second-row captain’s chairs that fold down, air-conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, and an interior air filter. The midrange GLS boasts power leather seats, an overhead console with trip computer, an integrated universal garage door opener, and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel. The GLS and Premiere models include an eight-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and mini-perforated leather seat trim. The line-topping Premiere model includes just about all of the afore-mentioned features with extras, such as a rear entertainment system, a reverse parking aid sensor, and heated seats. Available options for the Premiere model include third-row captain’s chairs, a six-CD dash-mounted changer, chrome wheels, and a power driver’s side sliding door.

Performance & Handling

Not many people look to minivans to deliver a high performance driving experience. But the Silhouette does deliver a pleasant driving experience. Steering is good, as is handling capability. With plenty of space inside, it feels quiet and composed from behind the wheel. It's ideal for long journeys with decent enough acceleration and a solid powertrain. Braking is smooth and easily modulated. All versions are powered by the same 3.4-liter, V-6 engine. Rated at 185 horsepower, that engine is mated with an electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission.

Safety

Standard safety features for the 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette include four-wheel ABS, dual front side-mounted airbags, child seat anchors, anti-theft alarm system, and daytime running lights. In tests conducted by the NHTSA for driver and passenger impact safety, it receives four out of five stars. It also received a perfect five-star rating in side impact front tests, four out of five stars for side impact rear tests, and three out of five for rollover tests. However, it receives a lowest rating of ""poor"" in frontal offset tests conducted by the IIHS. The front-drive models include other standard features, such as side-impact airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and GM’s unique PASSKEY III anti-theft system. The GLS and the Premiere are equipped with standard traction control, while the GL offers it as an option.
