2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette Review

Elegant, well-equipped minivan.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette provides a luxurious and fully equipped minivan which deserves consideration if you need such a vehicle. The Silhouette saw production for a number of years and remained popular until Oldsmobile finally phased out in 2004.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette stands out from the rest crowd because it has so many standard features fitted, including just about anything you can think of, or might possibly need. This year the Oldsmobile Silhouette comes in three different trim levels, so the manufacturer makes a model to suit everyone's needs.

The Range

Body Styles: minivan
Engines: 3.4-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Oldsmobile Silhouette GL, Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS, Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere

What's New

In 2001, the styling of the Oldsmobile Silhouette got freshened up, and all models received a number of extra standard features. This year Oldsmobile makes minor changes, which include the all-wheel-drive system becoming available on the GLS and Premiere, as well as the inclusion of 16-inch aluminum wheels. 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouettes come with standard dual-stage front airbags, which deploy according to the severity of the collision. The Silhouette Premiere comes with an on-board video system that includes a DVD player rather than a VCR.

The 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette serves as quite a large vehicle as it sits on a 120-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 201.4 inches. It measures 68.1 inches tall, and these dimensions make it slightly bigger than the Dodge Grand Caravan. It comes with dual sliding side doors, and the lift gate swings up to open. The passenger side door on the GLS and Premiere features power operation, and this feature provides an option on the GL. On the Premiere a power door on the driver’s side comes standard, but it remains optional on the GLS. The GL comes with standard 15-inch tires, while the GLS and Premiere have 16-inch tires on aluminum wheels. The antenna for the radio sits on the rear fender.

One of the major selling points of the Silhouette remains its well-equipped interior. The standard GL includes a number of standard features, such as air-conditioning, cruise control, an air filter, and power windows and locks. This model comes with fold-flat captain’s chairs in the second row of seating. Choosing the next model up, the GLS, adds leather seats with a driver memory feature, an integrated universal garage door opener, an overhead console complete with a trip computer, and a steering wheel with integrated radio controls.

The Premiere comes with just about everything standard, including a rear parking aid center, heated seats, and a television and DVD player for passengers in the rear seats. Optional extras for the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere include third-row captain’s chairs, an in-dash six-disc CD changer, and a power driver’s-side door.

This minivan has impressive seating capacity, and it remains easy to access the comfortable middle row of seats, but occupants have more difficulty accessing the third-row seating as space to maneuver feels a little limited. The third-row seats can fold flat.

Performance & Handling

The Silhouette seems easy to drive and offers excellent road handling which includes good breaking and responsive steering. In comparison with other minivans in this class, the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette actually seems like a pleasure to drive. It delivers a quiet and comfortable ride and a very civilized way to get from A to B, even on longer journeys. It has enough power to accelerate smoothly, as it contains a 3.4-liter V-6 that delivers 185 horsepower.

The 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette comes fitted with side-impact airbags for the front seats and anti-lock brakes as standard features. The GLS and Premiere include traction control, and this feature remains available as an option on the GL. The second row of seats includes anchors for child safety seats, and the top-of-the-range Premiere features a rear parking sensor system that audibly warns the driver if he gets too close to objects when reversing. This feature provides an option for the GL and GLS. Unfortunately this particular minivan doesn't perform well in government crash tests.
