More on the Oldsmobile Silhouette
Oldsmobile Silhouette Origins

The three-door Silhouette with its fine tapered lines debuted as a test piece to establish whether the design would be well received. However, as vehicle consumers have proven time and again, functionality proves to be the important factor, and the Silhouette provides outstanding functionality.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette, first released in the late 1970s, sports a much smaller ground clearance than other vehicles in the minivan market, which gives it an almost sporty look, defying its seven-passenger capacity and its large cargo space. It also comes with a longer than usual engine compartment that is topped off by a deep sloping windshield, which adds to its sporty look and higher curiosity to test the driving experience, which seems to translate into sales.

About the Oldsmobile Silhouette

The Oldsmobile Silhouette three-door minivan offers several engine options, namely the 3.1-liter V-6, the 3.4-liter V-6, and the 3.8-liter V-6, as well as two transmission options: the third-speed automatic and the four-speed automatic. The 1992 Silhouette boasts a power upgrade and sports a 3.8-liter V-6, producing 170 hp, which easily earns it recognition as a minivan with one of the largest and most powerful engines in its class. For all the good will in the market for this vehicle, it does not avoid recall problems. One of the most notable recalls applies to the 1997 to 2001 editions, which have rear sliding doors that do not latch once closed.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Features

The 2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette marks the final release of this vehicle with a front drive model that also offers a four-wheel drive option. It optionally comes with three or four doors and a four-speed automatic transmission with a 3.4-liter V-6 that produces 185 hp at 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

For comfort the vehicle comes fitted with a power door, power windows, and power door locks in the 2004 Silhouette edition and air-conditioning provides a standard feature on all trims. For handling and stability the vehicle employs an anti-locking brake system (ABS) and traction control.

The 2004 Silhouette is a generous vehicle with its external dimensions measuring 201.4 inches in length, 72.2 inches in width, and 68.1 inches in height, on a wheelbase of 120 inches and with a ground clearance of six inches. It offers ample cargo and passenger space, seating seven with 39.9 inches of headroom and 39.9 inches of legroom in the front. It provides 39.3 inches of headroom and 39 inches of legroom in the rear. The five available trims for this year include the Silhouette GL, the Silhouette GLS, and the Silhouette Premiere, which the EPA rates at 19/26 mpg city/highway. The other two trims, the Silhouette GLS (all-wheel drive) and the Silhouette Premiere (all-wheel drive) get 18/24 mpg city/highway.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Evolution

The 1990 to 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette has a notable option of interior leather upholstery that helps enhance its image as a luxury minivan. In line with most vehicles of this time, the 1991 edition transforms the interior materials to sport less of the plastics and synthetic leather and incorporates cloth upholstery. From 1992, all trims had ABS fitted as a standard safety feature and increased interior storage to enable occupants to better personalize vehicle use. These improvements include cup holders, a middle console in the front, side door pockets, and back-seat storage on the rear of the front seats.

In 1994, Oldsmobile introduced child seats that fit in the middle rear and revamped the safety and handling options with ABS remaining standard on all trims. Traction control also becomes available. The factory tinted windows offer an available option, though clear glass versions remain available. The 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette moves from 3.1-liter, the 3.4-liter, and 3.8-liter engine options to a standard 3.4-liter V-6 engine.

In 1998 and 1999, the Oldsmobile Silhouette included more entertainment integration, and the vehicle comes fitted with a TV monitor as a standard feature. Eight-passenger seating also becomes an option on this model. The 2000 Silhouette transforms back to the previous seven seating, and the eight seating discontinues. The range from 2000 emphasizes safety with child seat anchors and works on the suspension system for a smoother and safer overall ride.
