Overview

The 1997 Plymouth Neon is available in coupe and sedan body styles with three trim levels available for each body style. With a small engine, the lightweight Neon still feels fast and sporty, making it an excellent, basic transportation vehicle. Unfortunately, minor repairs may be needed, which makes the Plymouth Neon less dependable.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, sedan
Engines: 2.0-liter I-4, 2.0-liter I-4
Transmissions: five-speed manual
Models: Plymouth Neon Coupe, Plymouth Neon Sedan, Plymouth Neon Highline Coupe, Plymouth Neon Highline Sedan, Plymouth Neon Expresso Coupe, Plymouth Neon Expresso Sedan

What's New

The 1997 Plymouth Neon adds a new oil pan design in an attempt to reduce noise. Other changes include the addition of optional radios, a change in the upholstery fabric, redesigned wheels, and the addition of a few exterior colors.

Exterior

The 1997 Plymouth Neon Highline comes equipped with standard options, such as 14-inch wheels and intermittent windshield wipers. Furthermore, it has the option of receiving a spoiler, power exterior rearview mirrors, and fog lights. Meanwhile, the Expresso can come equipped with power exterior mirrors while it comes with standard a rear window defroster, which is an extra on the base model. The Highline also comes with a standard rear window defroster.

Interior

The 1997 Plymouth Neon can seat five occupants and comes with a standard split-folding rear bench seat in the Highline and the Expresso. Otherwise, it comes as an option in the base models. All models include more standard features like front bucket seats with a center armrest and storage area. A leather shift knob comes as an extra on the base model but is otherwise not available. Moreover, consumers seem to really like the spacious interior. It has front seats that are comfortable for the longer drives, and the rear seats are large enough for adults.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Plymouth Neon comes equipped with a manual five-speed transmission and two-liter I-4, which generates 132 horsepower and 129 ft-lb of torque. However, pushing it beyond its limits can lead to diminishing performance or the need for repairs. It also comes with a 1000-pound towing capacity.

Safety

The 1997 Plymouth Neon receives standard dual front impact airbags. All versions include optional anti-lock brakes, while the Highline and Expresso models can be equipped with a panic alarm. The Expresso is the only trim that comes with optional integrated child seats.
