2021 Polestar 2 MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Stylish, modern design
  • Exciting electric performance
  • Not as popular as the Model 3

  • Looks like a Volvo
  • Unproven quality and reliability
  • Driving range trails some competitors

The 2 is an all-electric vehicle built by Polestar. Once a division of Volvo, Polestar is now a standalone brand focused on sustainable electric performance. As the name suggests, the 2 is its second product. Polestar calls it a fastback; a four-door layout with a rear hatchback and slightly high roof orient it somewhere between a sedan and a crossover.

Inside, use of animal-free and recycled materials support its environmentally friendly mission. Technology is highlighted by abundant digital real estate running the latest in connectivity and driver assistance.

All-new for 2021, the Polestar 2 signals the brand's intentions. The 2's performance and features set it to compete against other upscale EVs currently available or due to arrive.

What We Think

It's no easy task to create a new automotive brand, but Polestar's effort with the 2 indicates a future for this nascent electric vehicle manufacturer.

Although not entirely separated from its Volvo lineage, the 2's ultra-modern styling stands out. Aiding that is its fastback form factor, which strikes us as more than a sedan but less than a crossover.

The theme continues inside. Again there's Volvo influence, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Design is minimalistic, but subtle cues like an illuminated Polestar logo in the glass roof or available gold seatbelts add interest. Evidencing its commitment to sustainability, Polestar fits the 2 with leather-free trim. A large infotainment touchscreen and digital gauge cluster display enhance the modish feel.

The car's dual-motor AWD setup will provide brisk acceleration, but the 2 isn't as quick as some super-sporty EVs. Instead, Polestar says it's focused on optimizing the 2's handling, with an optional Performance Pack bringing bigger brakes, stickier tires, and adjustable suspension.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Polestar 2 is powered by a 78-kWh battery providing electrons to an electric motor on each axle for AWD. Output measures 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, good for a Polestar-estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds. It's rated to tow up to 3,300 lbs. Targeted range is 275 miles on the EPA cycle. The Polestar 2 can be recharged using AC or DC currents.

Standard active safety and driver-assist features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and road sign recognition. The 2's chassis is designed with protection structures to shield occupants and the battery from impacts. Several airbags are also fitted.

Cargo Space

The Polestar 2's rear cargo area has about 14.3 cubic feet of capacity, and its front trunk can hold approximately 1.2 cubic feet, for a total of roughly 15.5 cubic feet. A reconfigurable rear cargo area organizer is included.

An 11.2-inch infotainment touchscreen is centrally positioned in the Polestar 2's dashboard. Running an operating system designed by Google, it includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, GPS navigation, and access to popular online music services. Various vehicle and charging settings are controlled through this touchscreen. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster display is standard. There are two USB type-C ports in each row, plus a wireless device charging pad up front. Audio plays through a speaker system provided by Harman Kardon. Parking is simplified by a 360-degree view camera system. Other cool tech features: The Polestar Connect app allows access and control of different functions from a mobile device, and , the car starts when it detects someone sitting in the driver's seat.
