2001 Pontiac Firebird Review

A sleek, sexy, powerful, and affordable sports car.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

When people think of the American sports car, they think of the Firebird. The Firebird Formula and Firebird Convertible Trans Am represent sleek, sexy style and tons of power, and the 2001 Pontiac Firebird does not disappoint. No matter which model you choose, when you get the Firebird out on the open road, you won’t want to look back.

The Range

Body Styles: hatchback, convertible
Engines: 3.8-liter V-6, 5.7-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed manual, six-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Pontiac Firebird Hatchback, Pontiac Formula, Pontiac Firebird Convertible, Pontiac Trans Am, Pontiac Trans Am Convertible

What's New

The 2001 Pontiac Firebird comes in a nice assortment of colors, including Bright Red and Navy Blue Metallic for the exterior and Camel, Ebony, and Taupe for the interior, and it also gives you more torque and horsepower with the V-8 in the Trans Am and Formula models.

Exterior

The 2001 Pontiac Firebird has an unmistakable style, and few driving enthusiasts fail to recognize a Trans Am on the road. In addition to a general sporty, sleek look, the Firebird base model has 16-inch alloy wheels, while the Trans Am hatchback features the classic T-Top roof and deck lid spoiler.

Interior

The classic Pontiac interior makes an acquired taste for some, with some plastic interior pieces that some many think cheapens the feel and a dashboard layout that seems old-fashioned, but for others, it has the perfect style for the muscle car. Interior features for the 2001 Pontiac Firebird include a tilt steering wheel with cruise controls on the wheel, bucket front seats, an AM/FM stereo and in-dash CD player, a six-way power driver’s seat, and leather on the front seats, shift knob, and steering wheel (on the Trans Am).

Performance & Handling

The Firebird focuses on performance, with 200 hp produced by the base model’s engine and up to 310 from that 5.7-liter V-8. The V-8 mates to a four-speed manual transmission, but you can opt for a six-speed manual instead. You also have your choice of some impressive performance option packages, including the Ram Air WS6 package for the Trans Am with double hood scoops for more power, WS6 suspension tuning, performance tires, and dual-outlet exhaust. An option package for the base model provides a limited-slip differential, the dual exhaust, and upsizes the tires.

The base model of the 2001 Pontiac Firebird comes in a hatchback or convertible body style and features a powerful 3.8-liter V-6 engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission with optional traction control. That engine cranks out a cool 200 horsepower with 225 lb-ft of torque. To really ramp things up, though, you should choose the Formula or Trans Am editions which feature a colossal 5.7-liter V-8 engine, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and delivering a blistering 310 horses and 340 lb-ft of torque.

Safety

With traction control optional, safety features for the 2001 Pontiac Firebird include four-wheel ABS, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and an anti-theft alarm system.

EPA Fuel Economy

Pontiac Firebird Base: 17/28 mpg city/highway
Pontiac Firebird Formula: 16/23 mpg city/highway
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am: 16/23 mpg city/highway
