2000 Pontiac Grand AM Review

Sporty but won’t win the race.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Pontiac Grand Am is one of the best-selling models in the Pontiac line. Pontiac, realizing this, raised the price of the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am to gain a little legroom in the market. Unfortunately, this has made the Grand Am a little less appealing than in previous years. The 2000 model has not received a lot of changes since it received a revamp in 1999. It continues the new tradition of sporty performance and equipment.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, sedan
Engines: 3.1-liter V-6, 3.8-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Pontiac Grand Am GT coupe, Pontiac Grand Am GTP coupe, Pontiac Grand Am SE sedan, Pontiac Grand Am GT sedan, Pontiac Grand Am GTP sedan

What's New

The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am has an improved engine, giving it a bit more power, less noise, and longer running parts. The interior is ""improved"" with a new center console, one that unfortunately clumps the instruments all together into an unreadable mess. There are several new paint choices this year as well. Last, but not least, there are several new feature packages that offer long lists of standard features.

Exterior

The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am has a suspension that keeps the nose of the vehicle low to the ground, and the tail end high. This gives the Grand Am an aggressive stance and a wedge-shaped silhouette. The typical Pontiac styling points are there as well, including lower body ribbing and a special twin-port grille. Both the coupe and the sedan model ride on a 107-inch wheelbase and measure 186 inches front to back. This makes the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am a few inches shorter than other midsize vehicles on the market. Standard exterior features include fog lights, a rear window defroster, 15-inch wheels, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, intermittent windshield wipers, and several body colors. Optional features include a rear spoiler to give the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am a sportier look.

Interior

The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am is meant to be a five-passenger vehicle, but the rear seat only seats two passengers comfortably. The front is equipped with two comfortable bucket seats. The back seat, although cramped, is a split bench that folds down to provide greater cargo space. The trunk is a little on the small side at 14.6 cubic feet, but it lacks any obstructions that might make getting a suitcase inside impossible. One thing the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am does not have going for it is good interior design. The instrument panel is incredibly cluttered with many of the instrument faces difficult to locate and read. The audio controls are very tiny and take concentration from the road. Standard interior features include bucket seats, a center console, tachometer, cloth seating, power steering, remote trunk release, tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, power door locks, auto on/off headlights, and an AM/FM stereo. Optional interior equipment includes cruise control, and an AM/FM/CD audio system.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Pontiac Grand AM comes equipped with one of two engines. A 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower is the base engine. All V-6 models come equipped with a 3.4-liter V-6 that produces 170 horsepower. Both engine types are paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a little weak for what is called a sport vehicle. In fact, the 2.4-liter lags behind the upgraded 3.4-liter models in many ways. The sporty V-6 models receive a stiffer suspension that performs better on the road, four-wheel anti-lock brakes for better traction and greater control altogether.

Safety

The 2000 Pontiac Grand AM comes equipped with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights, driver and passenger front airbags, and fog lights. The Grand Am did not receive great crash test marks. The NHTSA gave five out of five stars for passenger safety, four out of five stars for driver’s safety, but only one out of five stars for front-side impact. The IIHS gave the 2000 Pontiac Grand AM a rating of ""poor,"" its worst, for frontal offset crash tests.

EPA Fuel Economy

Pontiac Grand AM 2.4-liter four-speed automatic: 19/28 mpg city/highway
Pontiac Grand AM 2.4-liter five-speed manual: 19/28 mpg city/highway
Pontiac Grand AM 3.4-liter four-speed automatic: 17/29 mpg city/highway
