2001 Pontiac Grand AM Review

Not an Accord, but still a fun, sporty car that some drivers love.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am provides a sporty sedan or coupe with many similarities to the larger Grand Prix. It offers a sporty, fun drive with not quite as much power as the Grand Prix but better acceleration due to its smaller size and lighter weight.

Pontiac offers two models of the 2001 Grand Am, the SE and GT, each with its own option package and all available in either a coupe or sedan body style.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, two-door coupe
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.4-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Pontiac Grand Am SE coupe, Pontiac Grand Am SE1 coupe, Pontiac Grand Am SE sedan, Pontiac Grand Am SE1 sedan, Pontiac Grand Am GT coupe, Pontiac Grand Am GT1 coupe, Pontiac Grand Am GT sedan, Pontiac Grand Am GT1 sedan

What's New

The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am offers some new colors, especially for the SE, such as Champagne Beige Metallic and Dark Bronzemist Metallic. It also features a Bose stereo system with eight speakers to go with the AM/FM stereo and in-dash CD player.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am comes in five colors for the GT, a full 10 for the SE, including Bright Red, Arctic White, and Spruce Green Metallic. The Grand Am features 15-inch steel wheels, with 16-inch alloy wheels on the GT and a rear spoiler on most models. On the GT1, you also get a power sunroof and optional chrome wheels.

Interior

The interior of the Grand Am looks similar in style to the Grand Prix, with that cockpit feel including red backlit gauges and user-friendly knobs and buttons. A six-way power driver seat comes standard in the GT1, along with a premium Bose sound system with eight speakers for the AM/FM stereo and in-dash CD player. The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT also features a tilt leather steering wheel with cruise controls on the wheel and leather trim on the shift knob.

Performance & Handling

The Pontiac Grand Am handles well, especially with the stiffer suspension of the GT. The GT comes with a 3.4-liter V-6 that pairs with a four-speed automatic transmission, offering 205 lb-ft of torque and 175 horsepower. Speed-sensitive power steering also helps you handle this often peppy car in both low- and high-speed driving situations.

The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE features a five-speed manual transmission mated to a 2.4-liter, double overhead cam, four-cylinder engine.

Safety

Safety features on the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am include traction control, electronic brake force distribution, four-wheel ABS, and ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes. Other features include an anti-theft alarm system, emergency in-trunk release, front and rear headrests, and rear-door child safety locks.
