2008 Porsche Cayenne Review

A powerful sports car that anyone will love to drive.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne is a good SUV for sports-car lovers. It has an all-around luxurious feel to it both inside and out. There are a few new features in the 2008 model year, mostly in its increased engine power. The exterior and interior features are very generous, while the performance is impressive. Although the Porsche Cayenne is strong on features and performance, it has room to improve on fuel economy, which is a bit lower than most SUV models out this year.

The Range

Body Styles: sport utility vehicle
Engines: 3.6-liter V-6, 4.8-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed Tiptronic automatic
Models: Porsche Cayenne Base, Porsche Cayenne Tiptronic, Porsche Cayenne S, Porsche Cayenne GTS, Porsche Cayenne GTS Tiptronic, Porsche Cayenne Turbo

What's New

The Porsche Cayenne SUV gets a few new features for 2008. First off, both engine types receive more power, while the suspension is revised for sharper handling. A power liftgate, adjustable cargo tie-downs, and adaptive headlights are all new options, and the taillights have a new look.

Exterior

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne comes in 10 exterior colors. The exterior features on the Porsche Cayenne include: a power tailgate latch, power heated retractable mirrors, heat-insulating laminated glass with enhanced reflectivity and rear privacy glass, and integrated front and rear foglights. Also included are heated windshield washers, rain-sensing front and rear windshield wipers, heated washer nozzles in front, and intermittent delay controls for the rear wiper system. The 17-inch alloy wheels are paired with two exhaust outlets in matte silver finish on the Cayenne.

Interior

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV features titanium interior trim. The 12-way, power front bucket seats include a lumbar support system, while the rear seats are 60/40 split folding. The leather-wrapped, three-spoke, multifunction steering wheel is fully adjustable. Power windows and door locks, cruise control, a trip computer, HomeLink garage door opener, and six auxiliary power outlets are included. The alarm system in the Porsche Cayenne has ultrasonic interior surveillance with an inclination sensor. Also included in the security system is an immobilizer with an in-key transponder. The stereo system is an AM/FM/CD player with 12 speakers around the vehicle. The lockable glove box is air-conditioned. The air-conditioning is manual and includes an integrated charcoal and pollen filter. The rear window gets a defogger as well. The front and passenger seats get storage compartments, and there is a retractable luggage compartment cover with a detachable storage cassette and a pull-out luggage net. The vanity mirrors are illuminated, and there are front and rear reading lamps. A nice feature on this vehicle is that the brake pads have wear sensors that include an in-dash warning light when they are worn low.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV comes with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine or a 4.8-liter V-8 engine. The Base and the Tiptronic models are both rated at 290 horsepower, which provides for 273 lb-ft of torque. The S model is rated at 385 horsepower, which provides for 369 lb-ft of torque. The GTS Manual and GTS Tiptronic models are rated at 405 horsepower, which provides for 369 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the Turbo model is rated at 500 horsepower, which provides for 516 lb-ft of torque. Drivers have the choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Porsche Cayenne includes variable valve timing, power rack-and-pinion steering, and the Porsche Traction Management system with permanent all-wheel drive. Both the front and rear suspension get stabilizer bars.

Safety

The 2008 Porsche Cayenne comes with driver and passenger frontal airbags and side-impact airbags. The front and rear both get side curtain airbags. The rear seats include UCRA child seat anchors and child safety door locks. The Porsche Cayenne includes the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control system, which reduces body roll and lean in turns, adding extra safety for the road. This system also provides active anti-roll bars, which are designed to work off road as well. The braking system is four-wheel vented disc brakes with six-piston front and four-piston rear aluminum fixed calipers. The standard four-wheel anti-lock braking system is also in place.
