2013 Porsche Cayenne Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne truly puts the sport in sport utility vehicle (SUV). You may have an image in your mind of what an SUV looks and feels like, but you can throw that all out the window when you set eyes on and get behind the wheel of a Porsche Cayenne. The 2013 Cayenne is distinctively Porsche; in its rounded, aerodynamic exterior, in its tremendous power and pickup, and in its excellent handling. You’ll also get surprisingly good fuel economy, especially in the Diesel model. Of course, since this is an SUV, there’s plenty of cargo and passenger space as well. You’ll pay a little more for the Porsche Cayenne than for some other small SUVs on the market, especially if you throw in all the neat options, which are tough to resist. But if you’re a Porsche enthusiast, you know that you’ll get your money’s worth.

New For 2013

The big news about the 2013 Porsche Cayenne is the introduction of the new Cayenne Diesel, a Porsche SUV with a powerful diesel engine. Modern diesel engines are much improved from their old time counterparts, and more and more new vehicles are benefitting from the power of diesel. With the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel, you’ll get:

  • Better fuel economy (28 mpg highway)
  • Reduced emissions
  • Higher performance

Exterior

The exterior of the 2013 Porsche Cayenne has that distinctive Porsche shape; almost as if a 911 coupe had been stretched out to make room for five passengers and extra cargo. It is aerodynamic as well as practical, with a rear spoiler along with a power liftgate window and rear power liftgate door. It comes in an impressive array of colors, including Auburn, Dark Blue, Jet Black, and Meteor Grey. But what really makes the 2013 Porsche Cayenne impressive is its array of available options, which include exterior color wheel arch extensions, a variety of sporty wheel times and sizes, bi-xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System, sport exhaust pipes, roof rails, and moldings in a variety of finishes, a moonroof, off-road underbody protection, heated windscreen, and noise insulated privacy glass. It’s hard to think of a feature that you can’t get on the 2013 Porsche Cayenne.

Interior & Cargo

The interior of the Porsche Cayenne is simply beautiful, covered in leather with decorative stitching in deviating color and seat belts in a variety of classic and complementing colors. You can also enjoy the Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System for a state of the art audio experience while driving. The Porsche Control Management system (PCM) offers an easy to use centrally-situated high resolution touch screen that you can also operate with button control if you prefer. PCM lets you control the radio, CD/DVD, navigation, phone with Bluetooth capability, and even an available Electronic Logbook to record all the relevant data related to your trip.

You’ll also enjoy the basic luxury comforts, such as eight-way power front seats with adjustable lumbar support, dual-zone climate controls, cruise control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls on the wheel.

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne offers 23.7 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, and a maximum capacity of 62.9 cubic feet with the seats down.

Safety

Among the incredible safety features you’ll find in the Porsche Cayenne is adaptive cruise control with Porsche Active Safe. This convenient available feature actually regulates your cruise control according to your specifications so that you maintain a safe distance from the car ahead of you. You can also opt for Lane Change Assist, which monitors the area around the vehicle and lets you know when a car is approaching in your blind spot or coming up quickly from behind.

Of course, all the important safety features you come to expect on a quality SUV can be found in the 2013 Porsche Cayenne, such as a four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), front and rear head and dual front side-mounted airbags, stability and traction control, electronic brake force distribution, emergency braking assist, an engine immobilizer, alarm system for theft prevention, and child seat anchors and rear door safety locks for driving with the family.

Driving Experience

The base model of the 2013 Porsche Cayenne features a 3.6-liter, V-6, direct injection engine with all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, delivering 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque. Upgrade to the Tiptronic for an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission. As you can imagine, this little SUV handles like a dream, especially when equipped with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control and Porsche Active Suspension Management. Upgrade to the S model for a mighty 4.8-liter V-8 with eight-speed shiftable automatic and a serious 400 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. You won’t get quite as good fuel economy as the base model’s 17/23 mpg city/highway, but you’ll still be able to squeeze out about 16/22 mpg city/highway with the S model. If you go for the diesel with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 and eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission, you’ll still enjoy 240 horses with 406 lb-ft of torque, but really enjoy fewer trips to fuel up, with a fuel economy of 20/28 mpg city/highway.
