2022 Porsche Cayenne MODEL OVERVIEW

What was once controversial is now an icon of Porsche's lineup. The automaker introduced its first SUV, the Cayenne, way back in 2002. Now in its third generation and having spawned an offshoot, the Cayenne Coupe, the Cayenne combines Porsche's decades-old design language with genuine utility and some of the best driving dynamics of any SUV. 

The only change for 2022 is the addition of PCM 6.0, the latest generation of Porsche's infotainment software, which now features Android Auto integration. Porsche's entry to the competitive midsize luxury SUV segment squares off against the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, and Audi Q8.

What We Think

The Cayenne is packed with likable qualities, if you can get past the pricing. No matter how it's optioned, the Cayenne is expensive, and as is the case with its other vehicles, Porsche takes features we'd expect to be standard and instead makes them pricey optional extras. But the Cayenne redeems itself.

Even as an SUV, the Cayenne never feels like anything other than a Porsche; it mostly drives like a heartier Panamera. We've even found it to be a strong performer off-road, and when we evaluated the hybrid for 2019 SUV of the Year, most judges scratched "fun" into their notes. Porsche's hybrid system is seamlessly integrated, too, even if it leans toward performance instead of efficiency.

Those looking for a performance SUV can stop their search at the Cayenne Turbo. The coupe version took the top spot in the 2020 running of our annual super SUV comparison, in which we called it "a 911 in SUV clothing." If you want an SUV that drives like one of the best sports cars in the world, get yourself a Porsche Cayenne.

Performance and Efficiency

We struggle to think of an SUV with more depth and breadth in its engine options than the Porsche Cayenne. The range-topping Turbo S E-Hybrid boasts double the horsepower of the base V-6, and Porsche offers everything in between. All Cayennes pair their engines with an eight-speed automatic, and AWD is standard.

Safety Ratings and Features

Porsche includes automatic emergency braking on all models, but you'll have to pay extra if you want more driver assist features. If your pockets have the depth, available features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree camera system. Porsche's midsize SUV received a five-star overall safety rating from the Euro NCAP, but it hasn't been evaluated by the IIHS or the NHTSA.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Cayenne's cargo area measures noticeably smaller than those of the Land Rover Defender and BMW X5, but it's still large enough to sleep in if you fold down the rear seats. Porsche does not supply dimensions for front or rear legroom.

Technology

Every 2022 Cayenne features the same 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display as last year's SUV, but Porsche adds new functionality. The 2022 model gets PCM 6.0, Porsche's newest infotainment software. In addition to the integration of Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, the new system also features Apple Music and Apple Podcasts apps. Porsche has improved voice control functionality, allowing drivers to prompt the system with "Hey Porsche," and integrating more natural voice commands.

Like the 2021 Cayenne, most variants come equipped with a 10-speaker audio system. That said, Turbo models include a 14-speaker Bose setup, and audiophiles can drop some serious coin for 21-speaker Burmester audio which is available on all models.

Is There a Three-Row Porsche Cayenne?

Unfortunately for large families, the Cayenne only offers seating for five. That said, Porsche is working on a flagship three-row SUV positioned above the Cayenne. Expect there to be an electric variant, too.

Recommended Trim

To us, the sweet spot of the Cayenne lineup is the Cayenne E-Hybrid. The hybrid powertrain supplies more power and torque than the sport-focused Cayenne GTS, plus it delivers strong efficiency numbers and 17 miles of electric range. More performance and better fuel economy? We'll take it.
