2021 Porsche Panamera MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Proper Porsche performance
  • Sport Turismo wagon model is super rad
  • Impressive plug-in hybrid capabilities

Cons

  • Standard features list is short; options list is very long
  • Not as smooth as luxury competitors
  • Tires can drone at highway speeds

Sedan spaciousness and Porsche sportiness combine in the Panamera. It first debuted for the 2010 model year, wearing controversial styling somewhat reminiscent of stretched-out 911. The current second-generation Panamera bowed for 2017 with refined looks and more choices. The extended-wheelbase Executive and station wagon Sport Turismo body styles are now offered, along with numerous powertrain options including plug-in hybrids. Although more luxurious than other Porsches, the Panamera's sporty focus proves it's worthy of wearing the brand's crest.

The Panamera receives a host of changes and updates for the 2021 model year.

What's New

  • Revised front and rear styling
  • Updated steering wheel design
  • A 2.9-liter V-6 replaces the previous 3.0-liter V-6
  • Increased power in GTS model
  • Turbo model cancelled; replaced by Turbo S
  • Larger battery fitted to E-Hybrid models

What We Think

So-called "purists" may scoff that the Panamera isn't a real Porsche, but they're mistaken. This is a true sports car.

Within a few corners it's evident that the Panamera is worthy of the badge on its hood. Acceleration, braking, and handling are superb. At the same time the Panamera works as a luxury car. It provides ample interior space and a supple ride, although its sticky performance tires can be noisy.

The Panamera showcases Porsche's latest tech, including its infotainment system and hybrid powertrains. Build quality and materials are excellent, but features and content that many automakers now include standard are extra cost—it is a Porsche, after all.

Drivers who seek an opulent, serene vehicle have options in the large luxury sedan segment. Bur for enthusiasts, the Panamera delivers a genuinely sporty, genuinely Porsche driving experience.

Safety

In true Porsche fashion, features that competitors include as standard equipment are extra cost on the Panamera. That applies to the driver-assist and active safety systems, which include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, road sign recognition, and semi-autonomous lane-changing capability. Front and rear parking sensors are the only included help.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

In the Panamera sedan, cargo capacity measures 17.6 cubic feet behind the second-row seats, or 47.3 cubic feet with the second row folded down. The Panamera Executive also has 17.6 cubic feet of space with the rear seats upright, but this model's extended wheelbase contributes to a 52.6 cubic-foot maximum cargo measurement. The Panamera Sport Turismo wagon offers a bit more cargo space behind the rear seats with 18.3 cubic feet, and 49.0 cubic feet with those seats folded. However in E-Hybrid models the battery pack takes up about 3.6 cubic feet of space in each measure.

Technology

A 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen spans wide across the Panamera's dashboard. This system includes Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and built-in navigation. There's also a reconfigurable digital display in the gauge cluster. USB ports are standard in the front row, and optional in the second row. An optional rear-seat entertainment package adds a 10.0-inch touchscreen to each front seatback. The standard audio system has 10 speakers, while 14-speaker Bose and 21-speaker Burmester premium setups are available.

Is the Porsche Panamera a Hybrid?

Electricity isn't only for going green—it can be used to boost performance, too. Porsche shocked (pun intended) the world with the 918 Spyder, which utilized hybrid power to achieve staggering speed. Since then Porsche's been going hard on hybrids, and now offers plug-in capability on the Panamera. In E-Hybrid models, an 18-kWh battery pack sends juice to an electric motor integrated into the transmission. It supplements the gas engine with 134 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, resulting in quicker acceleration. However the hybrid system adds weight, which detracts from the handling. Still, for drivers who can appreciate enhanced fuel economy and some all-electric range, choosing a Panamera E-Hybrid model could be worthwhile.
