Porsche Panamera

The Porsche Panamera debuted in 2010, but its name has a much deeper history that honors Porsche's racing legacy. The Panamera is named after the Carrera Panamericana road race. This race only ran from 1950 to 1954 (with a brief re-emergence in 2006 and 2007), probably because it has a reputation as one of the most dangerous races in the world. Set in Mexico, where the roadways resemble those of the Italian countryside (such as races in Targa Florio and Mille Miglia), this race presents special challenges to engineers and drivers. Porsche vehicles dominate many of the races, so the company honors this by naming one of its newest creations after the grueling test of endurance.

About the Porsche Panamera

Purists might take offense at the Panamera's name. The Panamera, after all, does not look anything like the old Porsches used at the Carrera Panamericana. One glimpse at the Panamera and a lot of people think it has four doors, so it's not a real Porsche!

The Panamera, therefore, is known by some people as a Porsche that doesn't really look like a Porsche. Those people have almost certainly not driven a Panamera. Yes, it has a little more room in it than the standard Porsche and it has four doors, but it offers the power and handling that makes Porsche famous.

Like most Porsches, the Panamera carries a high price tag. It is a luxury vehicle with a luxury price.

Porsche Panamera Features

The 2012 Porsche Panamera comes in seven trim levels: Base, 4, S, S Hybrid, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S.

The Porsche Panamera base and 4 versions come with an impressive 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque—pretty impressive for entry-level versions.

The Panamera comes standard with several impressive features, including dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats, and even a cooled glove box to keep drinks chilled. The base and 4 versions don't skimp on the entertainment, either. They both come with an 11-speaker sound system that includes a USB interface for your mobile devices and an auxiliary audio jack. They even come standard with a hard-drive navigation system.

The only difference between the base and four versions is that the base uses rear drive and the 4 offers all-wheel drive.

The 2012 Porsche Panamera S and 4S come with a beefier 4.8-liter V-8 engine that gives you 400 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. As far as features go, you get everything standard in the previous trim levels and a few extra, such as driver-seat memory, shift paddles, and adaptive headlights. The V-8 remains the big attraction, though.

The Panamera S uses rear drive. The 4S offers all-wheel drive for more control.

The 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S add even more features (adaptive air suspension, 19-inch wheels, a 14-speaker Bose surround sound system, and heated rear seats stand out), but again additional power provides the main attraction. The Turbo contains a supercharged 4.8-liter V-8 engine that offers 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. If you want more, you can choose to add a Sport Chrono Turbo package that gives the engine an additional boost to 568 lb-ft of torque.

Need more power? The 2012 Panamera Turbo S's engine produces 550 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Critics testing these trim levels find that they can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

Powerful Porsche engines can burn gasoline quickly, making them look inefficient compared to ""sensible"" (i.e. less expensive) vehicles. The Turbo and Turbo S, for instance, only get 15/23 mpg city/highway. The Panamera S Hybrid seeks to curb that consumption without impairing performance. The S Hybrid has a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 and a 35kW electric motor that produce 380 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. That small sacrifice earns you 22/30 mpg city/highway. You also get the features that come with the standard gas-powered S version.

Porsche offers numerous additions and options that you can tack on to any of these trim levels. These packages come at a high price, but they let you customize the car to meet your specific preferences.

Porsche Panamera Evolution

The Porsche Panamera has remained unchanged since its debut in 2010. Porsche has, however, added some trim levels. The Hybrid and Turbo S joined the lineup in 2012.

Everything’s new -- this is Porsche’s first foray into the four-door-sedan realm. All versions except the Turbo sport the 400-horse naturally aspirated V-8.
