1998 Saab 900 Review

Unique car faces competition.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

Originally introduced in 1994, the Saab 900 has been a successful car. The 900 is for the gutsy type with its optional turbo-charged engine. Power is abundant for a car of this size and is sure to be just what certain people are looking for. It comes in two body styles, convertible and hatchback, which both have an S and SE model.

The Range

Body Styles: convertible, hatchback
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 2.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual
Models: Saab 900 S Convertible, Saab 900 SE Convertible, Saab 900 S
Hatchback, Saab 900 SE Hatchback

What's New

In 1998, the Saab 900 underwent a few changes. These changes included the option of bumpers the same color as the body and a turbo-charged engine added to the S Hatchback models.

Exterior

The 1998 Saab 900 is definitely a pleasing car to look at as opposed to some of the eye sores on the market. It has a nice modest body style that doesn’t go over the top but still looks nice. The car comes in a variety of colors and now has the option of body-colored bumpers. With the convertible measuring 182.6 inches in length, and the hatchback measuring in at the same, this is a decent-sized car. Standard features include alloy wheels, power antenna, rear spoiler, and tinted glass.

Interior

The 1998 Saab 900 boasts a roomy interior full of pleasing features. Cloth seating is standard but can be upgraded to leather for even more luxury. Standard interior features include center console, heated front seats, power controls, and air-conditioning. Some optional extras are a power moonroof and leather steering wheel trim.

Performance & Handling

In the 1998 Saab 900, the turbo-charge option can create performance and handling problems such as torque steering problems and too quick acceleration speeds that can cause unintended damage. Another problem it may present is less than perfect handling, due to the cars body style. Despite these problems, it's a good little car with plenty of power to go around. The regular 2.3-liter engine has 150 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The turbo-charged two-liter engine boasts an impressive 185 horsepower and 194 lb-ft of torque.

Safety

Not many of the 1998 Saab 900 models were rated in crash tests, but the ones that did scored fairly well, earning four out of five stars on the NHTSA tests. A score of marginal was reported on the IIHS ratings. Standard safety features include four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), driver and passenger front airbags, fog lights, and an anti-theft alarm system.

EPA Fuel Economy

Saab 900: 20/26 mpg city/highway
