Saab 9000 Origins
While many of the famous automakers in the U.S. started from existing buggy and industrial plants, many in Europe had their start in the war effort. With World War II causing so many problems, both the Allied forces and the Nazi-controlled countries needed engines and equipment to fight. The Saab Motor Company was founded in 1938 in Trollhattan, Sweden. The plant manufactured airplane bombers and fighters. In the first few years of production, Saab produced airplanes based on the American and German aircraft designs. Before long, the Saab 17, a Swedish-designed plane, joined the fight.
After the war ended, Saab executives knew the company needed to go in a different direction. Eventually, it decided to focus on making small, affordable cars for this unappreciated market in Europe. The manufacturing of the Saab 92 started in December 1949 and with the production of 700 units. This car has the passenger cage Saab designed. It provides an excellent example of one of the first safety features added to a car.
