2006 Scion tC Review

A customizable and safe vehicle loaded with interior options and average fuel economy; a great choice for everyday use.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2006 Scion tC Hatchback comes equipped with a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, gas engine with 160 horsepower. This vehicle offers few choices for engine or body styles, which may seem like a negative point for some, but Scion more than makes up for this with its interior features and high safety standards. The handling remains average and it uses a standard manual transmission, so the automatic transmission costs more. The great sound system in the Scion tC offers optional upgrades to make it even better with iPod compatibility. New features remain few on this vehicle, as it’s only the second year of the series. Audio controls provide one of the few features listed this year for the Scion hatchback. The 2006 Scion tC’s fuel economy falls into the average range.

The Pioneer audio system has a new head unit design with a remote mini-jack port for portable music devices. IPod connectivity displays iPod information and allows controlling the unit through the audio system. The tC debuted in 2005, so it shows few new features for the 2006 model.

The 2006 Scion tC Hatchback comes with a panorama moonroof with a power slide front glass panel and dual manual sunshades. The glass filters 97 percent of UV rays and 100 percent of infrared. The halogen headlights include an auto-off feature. The powered outside mirrors come equipped with turn indicators. The windshield wipers have a variable intermittent setting to adjust depending on weather conditions. The wheels included with this vehicle measure 17 inches and are six-spoke alloy wheels with graphite finish. These come fitted with all-season tires. Scion offers eight exterior colors to choose from, ranging in darker shades to lighter shades.

The 2006 Scion tC Hatchback comes with front sport bucket seats with fabric trim which have adjustable thigh and height support for the driver and a sleeping feature. The driver’s seat is one touch walk-in with track and seat-angle memory. The display includes an outside temperature gauge, amber instrument panel illumination, a tachometer, and a trip meter. The Scion tC includes power door locks and windows with a one-touch auto up/down feature and pinch protection. The doors have a remote keyless entry system with an electronic rear hatch locking system. Cruise control comes standard, as well as air-conditioning and a rear window defogger. The sound system, a Pioneer, offers an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player stereo with a satellite radio controller, Sound Retouch digital equalization, Scion branded sound processing, six speakers, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a customizable welcome screen. The antenna sits on the rear fender.

Performance & Handling

The 2006 Scion tC contains a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, inline gas engine with 160 horsepower, and it produces 163 lb-ft of torque. The five-speed manual transmission with overdrive comes standard and the four-speed automatic transmission remains optional. The vehicle uses front-drive with independent MacPherson strut suspension in the front and independent double wishbone suspension for the rear. It also has a power assisted rack-and-pinion steering system. The Scion tC stays quiet and smooth with a good, powerful sound to it without feeling overbearing. It uses electronic variable valve timing and twin balance shafts for smoothness.

The 2006 Scion tC receives a slightly above average rating with four stars for driver and passenger side-impact, passenger front-impact, and rollover protection. It earns a five-star rating for driver front-impact protection. The 2006 Scion tC comes standard with four-wheel ABS and electronic brake force distribution. Optional side airbags for the front occupants and full-length head curtain airbags provide additional protection. Scion also offers the option for a first aid kit, triple side-door beams and a driver knee airbag. Scion goes a long way to make sure its occupants stay safe. The company has issued one recall on the sunroof assembly due to the possibility of the glass wind-deflector breaking.
