2005 Scion xB Review

Those seeking a vehicle with less get-up-and-go but plenty of room for both passengers and cargo, as well as impressive fuel efficiency, will find what they are looking for in the 2005 Scion xB.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2005 Scion xB is a four-door wagon with ample passenger and cargo space, making it suitable as either a family vehicle or commercial car. This vehicle entered the Japanese market as the bB before coming to the U.S. as the xB in 2003. During its years in production, the xB has been a fairly popular vehicle among many different types of drivers.

Marketed primarily to younger drivers, this vehicle quickly became a favorite over the xA or tC despite its less-than-appealing flat lines. To Toyota’s surprise, even empty nesters took to the Scion xB, possibly for its exceptional roominess and outstanding fuel efficiency. The xB is a solid choice in the wagon world and could be the perfect fit for families and young drivers alike.

The Range

Body Styles: wagon
Engines: 1.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Scion xB

What's New

The 2012 Scion xB has stayed true to its style over the years, but now features more rounded lines over the wheel wells, along the back upper corners, and around the sides of the front grille. However, this Toyota model still boasts more people and cargo space than many sport utility vehicles (SUVs). While the 2005 model still sports a V-4 engine, it has lost some of its gas-saving ability, with 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

More recent versions offer many of the toys that both children and adults expect, including Bluetooth for hands-free phone use, an iPod/USB interface, and a navigation system. Unlike its 2004 predecessor, it is big on safety with both side airbags for the front-seats and full-length side/curtain airbags.

The Scion xB has a unique body style that some say looks like a toaster, and others claim is unique and eye-catching in its appearance. There are several body color choices to enhance the overall appeal of the neat-looking wagon. The standard exterior features that come on the 2005 Scion xB are 15-inch all-season tires with a temporary spare, four side doors, and rear-door access.

The Scion xB features cloth sport front seats with split-folding rear seats, front cup holders, power steering, locks, windows, and mirrors, air conditioning with front and rear ventilation, a Pioneer stereo system with AM/FM radio, a CD player with MP3 capability, and six speakers. The cargo capacity with seats up is 21.2 cubic feet and it has a maximum capacity of 43.4 cubic feet.

Optional features include a Preferred Accessory package with a carpet/cargo mat, a radio with an in-dash, six-disc CD changer, silver sport pedals, a rear spoiler, fog lights, armrests, cup holders, rear taillights, Sirius satellite radio, a subwoofer, a cargo tote and net, and a variety of appliqués and graphics.

Performance & Handling

This vehicle has a JD Power performance rating of three out of five. It offers a fairly quiet and comfortable ride but any bumps in the road will be noticeable. This boxy car is not the best for ease of parking but performs well on the highway and in the city. The clutch is smooth, the brake system works well, and the vehicle hugs well around corners. The 2005 Scion xB has the restrained engine power of a four-cylinder but its fuel economy is better than many of its competitors.

The Scion xB includes numerous safety features, such as a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with ventilated front and rear drum brakes, electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist, a rear defogger and rear window wiper, engine immobilizer, stability and traction control, child safety locks on the rear door, and a first aid kit.

The 2005 Scion xB received a five out of five safety rating on all impact and rollover tests. There have been no safety recalls on the 2005 Scion xB. Customer reviews gave it a nine out of ten rating – a very reassuring fact to know when purchasing a new vehicle,.
