You are watching a WheelsTV Top 200 Video Test Drive on the 2009 Scion xB.
The 2009 Scion xB is a compact station-wagon crossover geared towards tuners and younger buyers. Introduced in 2004 and fully redesigned last year, the xB's boxy design remains unmistakable even with its wealth of options and custom accessories.
The 5-passenger xB's fresh styling includes rounded corners and lines when compared with the previous generation's xB. Where the old xB had slight curves for the fenders, this xB has bulging fender flares surrounding 16-inch alloy wheels, yet still manages to keep the box idea intact. Everything from the center-mounted instrument cluster to the asymmetrical backup light, to the dash-mounted, rather then floor-mounted, shifter announce that this is no ordinary crossover.
A 2.4-liter dual overhead cam 4-cylinder engine powers the xB. Its 158 horsepower and 162 pound feet of torque are sent to the front wheels via either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel consumption is listed at 22 city miles per gallon and 28 highway.
Safety features include front airbags for passenger and driver, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring system.
The 60/40 folding rear seats provide decent cargo room, however the xB's real bread and butter is its custom accessories. The model that we test drove had a fiberglass spoiler and an exhaust that was pronounced in both sound and appearance. A wide range of accessories are also available including 19 inch Toyota Racing Development wheels, sport muffler, sway bars, lowering kits, a variety of shift knobs... the list of customizable features goes on and on.
All xB's come standard with a 160 watt AM/FM/CD player with ipod capability and six speakers. The xB that we test drove had a pioneer premium audio system with XM radio and controls on the steering wheel. All controls are ergonomically designed and easy to use.
Base MSRP for the 2009 Scion xB is $15,750. A fully loaded model can cost around $20,000. All models come with a 5-year, 60,000-mile power train warranty and the reliability for which Toyota, Scion's parent company, is well known.
The sleek and sporty box otherwise known as the Scion xB encompasses a standout design, the practicality of a wagon crossover and the limitless possibilities for customizing your ride.
