2011 Scion xB Review

The 2011 Scion xB is spacious and funky.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2011 Scion xB is a five-door compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota and sold under its Scion marquee. Currently in its second generation and like other vehicles sold under the Scion brand, the xB is targeted at young drivers and does so with its bold and unique styling. In fact, it is safe to say that the 2011 Scion xB is the only car with its design.

The second-generation Scion xB was launched at the New York Auto Show in 2006 as a concept car. The production model was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show the following year. While the vehicle’s unique selling proposition remained its unusual design, it was significantly less boxy and larger than the first generation xB.

The Range

Body Styles: box-shaped five-door compact hatchback
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine
Transmissions: five-speed manual (standard), four-speed automatic (optional)
Models: Scion xB base model, Scion xB Release Series 8.0

What's New

The 2011 Scion xB received a few changes from its previous incarnations. The vehicle is now available in two new colors, and the exterior and interior were changed as well.

On the outside, the 2011 Scion xB received a changed front bumper, front grill, headlights, rear bumper, and taillights. Inside the xB, the gauge cluster was revised along with the center console. The front and rear passenger seats are also made of new material.

In addition to these tangible changes, the 2011 Scion xB also made its debut in the Canadian automotive market as part of the Scion lineup.

The 2011 Scion xB’s exterior undoubtedly sets it apart from the rest of its competitors. Its boxy shape stands out among its curvier competitors. This funky box-like shape is meant to appeal to young buyers who want a car that looks completely different from the average family wagon or hatchback. The first generation xB delivers this uniqueness and so does the 2011 model, albeit to a slightly smaller level. The 2011 Scion xB sacrifices a little of its signature exterior design, but gains more functionality.

The exterior of the 2011 Scion xB comes with 16-inch steel wheels as standard, but customers have two other options to choose from: 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels. The vehicle can also be fitted with fog lights and a rear spoiler as options.

The unique exterior of the 2011 Scion xB is not just about looks. The box shape of the car gives it some of the most spacious cargo space and interior in its class.

The car’s interior is definitely one of the most spacious in its segment. The cargo space is larger than most of its rivals, as well as a few midsized SUVs. Passenger space is also very good with adequate headroom in front. The rear seat is even large enough to fit tall people comfortably. Speaking about tall people, the steering wheel has a tilting and telescoping function that allows it to be adjusted for tall drivers.

One of the most important elements inside the 2011 Scion xB is the six-speaker Pioneer stereo system with its auxiliary audio jack input, iPod interface, RCA output for more speakers, and customized head unit. Another upgraded package is available that puts a touch-screen interface on the head unit display and a knob that works like an iPod’s clickwheel. A media expander option improves the quality of the music even further.

Some people might have a problem with the center console system fitted in the 2011 Scion xB, but it is clearly a matter a personal opinion. The overall quality of the interior lacks due to the presence of too many low-grade plastics.

Performance & Handling

The 2011 Scion xB is fitted with a 2.4-liter straight-four engine that delivers 158 hp of power and 162 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission gearbox as standard, although a four-speed automatic is also available. The engine is lively and always eager to go, but the vehicle does not fare well in terms of stability.

Standard safety features include stability and traction control, front seat and side curtain airbags, and anti-lock disk brakes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2010 model four out of five stars and its highest rating of ""good"". It has not conducted tests on the 2011 model.
