2009 smart fortwo Review

Unique subcompact car great for urban driving.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2009 Smart fortwo shows very few changes from the original model, which debuted in the U.S. in 2008. This rear-engine, two-seater is a minicompact car that remains one of the smallest available. The name of the car refers to the number of seats within it. Initially developed as a joint project between Mercedes and the watch company Swatch, the Smart fortwo marks one of the most unique vehicles on the road. This one-of-a-kind design, combined with fluctuating gas prices, means that sales of the Smart fortwo have been consistently growing since its launch in the U.S.

The Range

Body Styles: Coupe hatchback, Cabriolet
Engines: 1.0-liter three-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed automated manual
Models: fortwo pure, fortwo passion coupe, fortwo BRABUS coupe, fortwo passion cabriolet, fortwo BRABUS cabriolet

What's New

The 2009 Smart fortwo introduces an additional trim level for both the coupe and cabriolet models. The Brabus limited editions include 15-inch alloy wheels in front and 17-inch wheels in the rear, front and rear spoilers, a stiffer and lower sport suspension, interior and exterior Brabus badging, a sport-tuned exhaust system, and heated leather seats. All of the additional tuning, equipment, and features of the Brabus models give the 2009 Smart fortwo a sportier look and feel.

Exterior

The 2009 Smart fortwo comes as a coupe or a cabriolet. A new, sportier trim created in partnership with Brabus increases the number of trim levels for the coupe from two to three and from one to two for the convertible models. All models have two passenger doors, and the coupe uses a hatchback body style.

The 2009 Smart fortwo shows off a distinct look, different from everything else on the road. This ultracompact car has an extremely short wheelbase, which gives it a tight turning circle. The 2009 Smart fortwo's tiny size makes it an excellent choice for urban driving, as it can fit into some of the smallest parking spaces. Fifteen-inch wheels come standard on all models. The 2009 Smart fortwo passion coupe features a panoramic glass roof, while the passion cabriolet model has a manually operated canvas softtop roof. The Brabus version of the cabriolet has a power operated roof.

Interior

Although the 2009 Smart fortwo remains one of the smallest cars on the road, the use of space within makes it deceptively roomy. By mounting the engine in the rear, the model leaves plenty of legroom for both passengers. Also, the height of the car means that even the tallest of passengers enjoy ample headroom. The 2009 Smart fortwo measures narrow, so it can feel cozy with two full-size adults inside.

The interior design looks simple, yet attractive. Seating feels comfortable, and all space has been used to provide maximum comfort and storage. Occupants make use of a storage compartment under the seats, and the engine sits under the floor boards, providing cargo space behind the two seats. The passenger seat can fold flat to create more cargo space.

Performance & Handling

The 2009 Smart fortwo's 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine produces 71 horsepower and 68 lb-ft of torque. The five-speed automated transmission is clutch free and can be driven as a regular automatic or as a manual through the use of either a stick mounted on the console or paddles mounted on the steering column of passion models.

For city driving, the 2009 Smart fortwo feels quite sporty, but acceleration can feel slow from a stop. The transmission proves quite rough whether driven in automatic or manual mode. By using the manual transmission, drivers improve the acceleration and smoothness of the ride. The narrow width and tall height, as well as low weight, makes the 2009 Smart fortwo susceptible to a great deal of sideways movement due to wind or larger vehicles passing at speed.

Safety

2009 Smart fortwo standard features include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, and side airbags. The 2009 Smart fortwo earns good frontal crash test scores and perfect side-impact crash test scores.
