2013 smart fortwo Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2013 Smart fortwo remains the smallest car sold in the U.S. However, unlike many expect, it does not rate the best fuel efficiency. At just 34/38 mpg city/highway, it's not too hard to find a roomier car offering better gas mileage. The fortwo also requires premium fuel, which is not typically a requirement for vehicles in this compact class.

However, no one can deny that the Smart fortwo is small enough to get into parking spaces that most cars can't; and depending on where you live, that could be a huge plus. It also has a very unique look and customizable style. And with the introduction of an electric plug-in model, the fortwo may begin to impress those who are seeking green options. Whether you're driving a Smart car for its size or unique look, one thing is for sure, this car is going to be noticed.

New For 2013

The Smart fortwo receives some small changes to the exterior look in 2013, as well as an all-new electric model, including:

  • Smart Electric Drive model is introduced
  • Minor restyling with new front and rear bumper fascias and side sills
  • New location for the Smart logo badge - moved from the front of the short hood to the center of the wide grille just above the bumper

Exterior

The 2013 Smart fortwo comes in two trims: Pure Coupe and Passion Coupe. The Passion also comes as a cabriolet. The Smart Electric Drive model will also be available as both a coupe and cabriolet. There are a variety of color choices and customizations available. Buyers can mix and match colors on different modular parts of the car, creating a unique look.

The fortwo comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, intermittent wipers, and a rear defogger. The Passion Coupe and Cabriolet offer BARABUS 15-inch six-twin-spoke wheels in grey or black finish, LED daytime running lights, and Tridion Safety Cell as available exterior options. The Passion Cabriolet's power convertible roof is standard.

Interior & Cargo

Even though the 2013 Smart fortwo is small on the outside, somehow it is amazingly big on the inside. The interior is relatively roomy and plenty big for two adults, even tall ones. Six-foot-plus drivers will appreciate the 39.7 inches of headroom.

The list of standard features on the Pure fortwo includes keyless entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather trim on shift knob, and 12V power outlets. Air-conditioning, heated seats, cruise control, and an auxiliary audio/USB jack are optional on the Pure. Upgrading to the Passion provides standard air conditioning, power mirrors, one-touch power windows, and transmission controls on the steering wheel.

Available options on the customizable fortwo include automatic rain-sensing wipers, light-sensing headlights, LED daytime running lights, foglights, interior ambient lighting, heated seats, power steering, cruise control, center console storage, anti-theft alarm, a four-speaker highline radio with touchscreen display, navigation, and Bluetooth.

Safety

Due to its size, there are understandable concerns about safety. Although the car is small, it performs relatively well in crash tests compared to other cars of similar size. In fact, the engineers spent quite a bit of time making sure the fortwo is up to par when it comes to safety. The frame is inspired by racecar roll cages with strong, reinforced steel. The fortwo also comes standard with Smart's Electronic Stability Program, which helps keep the car under control, plus seatbelt tensioners, belt force limiters, collapsible steering column, eight full-size airbags, anti-lock brakes, child seat anchors, and a post-collision safety system that turns on the hazard lights and cuts fuel to the engine in the event of a crash.

Driving Experience

Driving performance and handling is not exactly the reason one buys a 2013 Smart fortwo. First, it doesn't have a lot of power, even for its size. The 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine lacks responsiveness and the five-speed single-clutch transmission is rough. The car tends to randomly jump forward when you'd least expect it and a gust of wind or even a passing car may make it a little hard to handle. The 2013 Smart fortwo doesn't perform very well at high speeds either, especially on the freeway. Buyers who are looking for a really small car with lots of personality will likely overlook the bumpy ride.

The 2013 Smart fortwo also welcomes a new electric plug-in model to the lineup. The Smart Electric Drive model has an all-new battery pack and powerful electric motor that provides peak power of 55 kilowatts (74 horsepower) and a sustained rating of 35 kW (47 hp). The car can be charged with a regular home socket in about seven hours, although a quick-charging unit reduces charging time dramatically.

Smart says that the electric model will offer a similar driving experience as the other Smart models and will have a 90-mile range with a top speed of 77 mph.
