While many American automakers started out as buggy or carriage companies, many European and Asian car companies started out as aircraft plants and translated the engineering expertise that they developed during wartime into success in the field of automotive design and manufacturing. Japanese auto maker Subaru is one of those companies, starting out as a manufacturer of planes and replacement parts. In 1958, the company presented the Subaru 1500, later to be renamed the Subaru 360. When the car debuted in the U.S. in 1968, it was widely considered unattractive, but the car caught on, thanks to its amazing fuel efficiency and reliable performance.

After the company’s start with the U.S. market in the late 1960s, Subaru started making design changes meant to entice the muscle-car-oriented American public. The Subaru Brat appeared in 1977 with astonishing open seats in the cargo area. Later, the Legacy and the Outback debuted.

In its attempts to appeal to the American consumer, Subaru didn't just focus on developing more appealing body styles. The company also invested greatly in designing better-performing engines to compete with the U.S.-based car manufacturers who put a premium on power. Subaru continues to make and sell some of the most popular options for the American buyer, including the Subaru B9 Tribeca sport utility vehicle.

About the Subaru B9 Tribeca

Like most of Subaru’s line ups, the B9 Tribeca is known for its unique body design and reliable powertrain. The Tribeca started out as the Outback wagon, and the two models share the same platform. The B9 Tribeca is Subaru’s midsize SUV that was offered for the 2006 model year. After that year, the name was changed to Tribeca and a large number of changes were made to the SUV's body and mechanics to create a new model.

When it went into production for the 2006 model year, the B9 Tribeca was noted for its unique body style, which featured an airplane-inspired front grille, a departure from the norm for the Subaru brand. The SUV's name had special significance as well; the ""B"" stands for the vehicle’s boxer engine, while the ""9"" refers to the chassis designation.

The Subaru B9 Tribeca was offered for one year only, in 2006. Its body design was inspired by a combination of the company’s aircraft-manufacturing beginnings and the Outback wagon and the Legacy. As it turns out, the company decided to keep many of these unique changes and rolled them out to some of its other designs, including the later version of Tribeca.

The B9 Tribeca was offered in the base trim level, as well the Limited trim. The base model was equipped with seating for seven, while the Limited could be ordered with seating for five or seven. The base edition was made with plenty of extras such as air-conditioning, power accessories, and cruise control standard. It also featured a single-disc CD player and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The higher-end Limited edition was a bit better equipped. When purchasing the higher trim model, buyers were treated to leather upholstery and a six-disc CD sound system. Some of the Limited editions also offered a navigation system, a DVD entertainment system in the rear of the vehicle, or both.

The powertrain for the B9 Tribeca consisted of a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine. The boxer engine is unique to Subaru and has been used in a number of its vehicles, including the Outback. For the 2006 model year, it was teamed with all-wheel drive and a five-speed automatic transmission. The transmission system offers a SportShift function that allows the system to be operated manually as well.
