2005 Subaru Impreza Review

The station wagon is great as both a family vehicle and cargo-hauler, the sedan is a very reliable vehicle, and the WRX and STi models offer plenty of power.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Subaru Impreza debuted in 1993 as five-door, five-passenger sedans and wagons with L and LS trims. These models had 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engines and five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions with 110 horsepower (hp).

The 2005 Subaru Impreza includes a variety of four-wheel-drive wagons and sedans. The 2.5 RS, Outback Sport, and Outback Sport Special Edition have 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engines with 165 hp. The WRX has sport-tuned suspension and a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that gives out 227 hp. The sportiest model, the STi Sedan, has the more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a turbocharged engine that generates a whopping 300 hp.

The Subaru Impreza is known as a reliable vehicle with plenty of features and sufficient power under the hood, making it an excellent choice for most drivers.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon, STi
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 2.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic, six-speed manual
Models: Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Special Edition, Subaru Impreza WRX, Subaru Impreza STi Sedan

What's New

The Impreza has seen many changes and improvements. In 2005, Subaru replaced the 2.5 TS Sport Wagon with the 2.5 RS Sport Wagon, a new model with four-speed automatic transmission and a fully redesigned dashboard. All trims now include improved transmissions, updated headlights, improved suspension struts, electronic brake force distribution, and more. The RS features silver alloy wheels and upgraded leather features, and the Outback Sport boasts a redesigned grille. The WRX now comes standard with sport seats, a tachometer, and faux metal accents.

Exterior

The Impreza 2.5 RS, Outback Sport, and Outback Sport Special Edition have 16-inch alloy wheels, all-season tires, and an inside-mounted spare. The Outback Sport includes fender flares, rear quarter glass, and roof rails. The Outback Sport Special Edition and WRX include a roof rack and a rear spoiler. The WRX has a large air scoop and oversized rear spoiler that gives a very sporty look to the exterior. The STi Sedan has 17-inch wheels, a large rear spoiler, and an oversized scoop. There are also various colors available for sprucing up the exterior of the Impreza to suit individual preference.

Interior

The Impreza 2.5 RS has cloth front bucket seats with a height-adjustable driver’s seat, split-folding rear seats, a front storage console, cup holders, power doors, windows, mirrors and steering, cruise control, air conditioning with rear vents, a clock, a tachometer, and an AM/FM radio with a CD player and four speakers.

The Outback Sport adds an exterior temperature display and the Outback Sport Special Edition includes a leather steering wheel and shift knob, a compass, a six-disc CD player, and cup holders throughout. The WRX adds climate control and interior air filtration. The STi Sedan has premium cloth front bucket seats, gold or silver painted wheels, and manually-operated water spray to enhance intercooler efficiency.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Subaru Impreza model’s all-wheel drive allows it to hug the road. The WRX hot rod version and sporty STi model rev quickly and provide exceptional acceleration (zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds), but the ride becomes much louder in the process.

The 2.5 RS, Outback Sport, and Outback Sport Special Edition have 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engines with 165 hp, which is fairly efficient for most drivers. Bumping up to the next level, the WRX includes the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 227 hp – a good choice when combined with the sport-tuned suspension. The sportiest-looking model, the STi Sedan, has the turbocharged, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that generates a whopping 300 hp – the perfect choice for those drivers that enjoy a little extra power with their sharp-looking vehicle.

Safety

There are many important safety features that are included on the Subaru Impreza. The 2.5 RS has front and rear disc brakes, electronic brake force distribution, adjustable front headrests, child seat anchors, and rear door safety locks. The Outback Special Sport Edition includes rear headrests, a rear defogger, and rear wipers. The WRX and STi include front side-mounted airbags, and the STi adds an engine immobilizer and remote anti-theft alarm.
