INTRO: Touting a fresh, new look, a roomier interior and a new, more fuel-efficient engine, the 2012 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback make a good case for trimming down consumption while beefing up comfort and convenience, and looking good for the effort. The 5-passenger all-wheel drive compact sedan and hatchback are available in the base 2.0i, Premium, and Limited trims while the hatchback additionally offers Sport Premium and Sport Limited models.
With a bolder grille and headlights, a more steeply raked windshield and fluid bodylines, the Impreza gains a distinguished and relaxed look of confidence. And while the wheelbase is longer, length and width have not increased, maintaining easy-to-maneuver compact dimensions.
PERFORMANCE: Both sedan and hatchback Imprezas get a new 2-liter horizontally opposed flat-4 cylinder Boxer engine sending 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque to Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive via a 5-speed manual gear box or available continuously variable transmission. Though less powerful than the 2.5-liter engine it replaces, the new engine provides better fuel economy.
FUEL ECONOMY: Here are the highest and lowest EPA estimates for fuel economy:
FEATURES: With the longer wheelbase come volumes of extra cabin space. Rear seat legroom increases to 35.4 inches in both sedan and hatchback. Meanwhile, the sedan boasts 12 cubic feet of trunk space while the hatchback yields 52.4 cubic feet of cargo space by lowering the 65/35-split flat-folding rear seat.
Optional equipment includes a power moonroof and voice-activated GPS navigation with a high-resolution 6.1-inch touch-screen display. An optional all-weather package features heated front seats, heated side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. Sport Premium and Sport Limited models feature roof rails and 2-tone exterior colors.
SAFETY: Standard safety equipment includes Vehicle Dynamics Control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, and a full complement of airbags including a driver's side knee airbag.
PRICING: Base MSRP for the 2012 Subaru Impreza is $17,495. A Sport Limited hatchback starts at $22,595.
WARRANTY: The Impreza is backed by a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
CLOSING: Upholding the brand's tradition of safety, reliability and thriftiness, the all-wheel drive 2012 Subaru Impreza stands to broaden its appeal with new looks, improved comfort and impressive efficiency.
