1995 Subaru Legacy Review

This car will certainly leave a legacy.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1995 Subaru Legacy is a midsize car in its second generation. This generation began with a complete exterior redesign; the car soon went into production in 1993, but it only became available in the North American market in the 1995 model year.

The Range

Body Styles: station wagon, sedan
Engines: 2.2-liter H-4
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Subaru Legacy, Subaru Legacy L, Subaru Legacy LS, Subaru Legacy LSi, Subaru Legacy Brighton, Subaru Legacy Outback

What's New

The 1995 Subaru Legacy gets new sheet metal for an improved exterior design. However, this year also sees the discontinuation of the popular turbocharged engine, thereby leaving it with an underpowered, 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 135 horsepower. The Brighton wagon is introduced this year, and it includes all-wheel drive, a stereo system, and air-conditioning. The wagon also makes its debut this year in an attempt to attract consumers in the growing SUV market.

Exterior

The 1995 Subaru Legacy comes with a complete exterior design overhaul. The taillights on the Subaru SVX influence the taillights on the Legacy wagon and sedan. The sedan has a length of 180.9 inches, while the wagon version has a length of 183.9 inches. The width of the car is 67.5 inches, but the height varies by model. The wagon has a height of 57.1 inches, while the 2.5GT wagon has a height of 60.3 inches. Similarly, the sedan has a height of 55.3 inches, while the 2.5GT sedan has a height of 55.7 inches.

Interior

The 1995 Subaru Legacy is strictly average inside. There is ample headroom at the front and back, but occupants with a height of six feet or more can have problems fitting in, especially in the back. On a positive note, the cargo space available is one of the best in its class, and the narrow roof pillars and low dashboard provide clear visibility for the driver in all directions.

Performance & Handling

The 1995 Subaru Legacy's 2.2-liter, flat-four engine delivers 135 horsepower, which is decent enough in most cases. However, the engine clearly begins to strain itself when it is pushed hard or has to go uphill. Another important thing to note about the engine is its noise; the 2.2-liter engine is one of the gruffest sounding four-cylinder engines.

The suspension of the 1995 Subaru Legacy deserves special mention for having made the right balance between the ride and handling with a slightly greater emphasis on ride comfort. Most bumps are absorbed effortlessly, and the car feels quite stable. Some amount of body lean is noticeable while making sharp turns, more so for the front-drive models than for the all-wheel-drive models.

Safety

The 1995 Subaru Legacy is available with dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, and other safety features. However, there are no government crash-test results available for the car at present.
