1997 Subaru Legacy Review

This car will definitely leave a ?Legacy.?

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

Subaru continues its emphasis on all-wheel drive with the 1997 Subaru Legacy, while consequently reaping the benefits of buyers’ increased awareness about the safety benefits of all-wheel drive. The availability of two body styles–a sedan and a wagon–adds to the Legacy’s popularity, along with a number of upgraded models and trims. The all-new Outback Limited brings a level of luxury to the family, with its leather upholstery and finer styling. On the other hand, the Legacy is not the cheapest option in this class. Overall, the 1997 Subaru Legacy offers just enough to make it worth a look before moving on to ever-popular options such as the Toyota Camry or Ford Taurus.

The Range

Body Styles: wagon, sedan
Engines: 2.2-liter four-cylinder, 2.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Subaru Legacy Brighton, Subaru Legacy L, Subaru Legacy Outback, Subaru Legacy GT, Subaru Legacy Outback Limited, Subaru Legacy LSi

What's New

Subaru drops all front-drive models of the Legacy for 1997, returning to all-wheel drive as the standard for the full lineup. Both the 2.2-liter and 2.5-liter engines receive a slight boost in torque and power this year, while the 2.5-liter engine only comes on the Outback model. Cruise control, anti-lock brakes, and power door locks become standard on L models, and the GT receives a manual transmission, fresh styling, and bigger tires. The Limited joins the Legacy Outback lineup, offering a leather interior, fresh colors and wood trim, and alloy wheels.

Exterior

The Subaru Legacy’s exterior design does not look particularly stylish or eye-catching; fashion keeps buyers away from the 1997 Subaru Legacy. The list of exterior features for the various models includes tinted glass, a rear window defogger, power windows, power locks, fog lights, alloy wheels, and a roof rack.

Interior

The 1997 Subaru Legacy boasts a roomy, comfortable cabin. Air-conditioning and an 80-watt sound system start out standard on the base Brighton. Other features include cruise control, a tachometer, tilt steering, and a cassette player. The LSi offers a CD player and leather seating, while a sunroof comes on the LSi and 2.5 GT.

Performance & Handling

The Subaru Legacy handles quite well and benefits from good acceleration along with its standard all-wheel drive. The 2.2-liter engine pairs with a five-speed manual transmission, while the 2.5-liter engine matches with either the five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, depending on the model. All options provide a fair amount of power and decent performance.

Safety

The 1997 Subaru Legacy gains major safety points among buyers for its standard all-wheel drive. The list of safety equipment includes child safety door locks. Driver and front-passenger airbags come standard, but side airbags remain unavailable. Anti-lock brakes improve all models except the Brighton.

EPA Fuel Economy

Subaru Legacy Brighton: 20/27 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy L: 20/27 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy Outback: 18/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy GT: 18/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy Outback Limited: 18/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy LSi: 18/25 mpg city/highway
