2003 Subaru Legacy Review

All-wheel drive vehicle is capable, stable, and reliable.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2003 Subaru Legacy is a powerful, all-wheel-drive, midsize car. All Legacy models include 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engines with all-wheel drive. The last major redesign for this model was in 2000. The wagon body style tends to rate higher with consumers due to additional storage space and higher safety ratings. While not as light on fuel costs as many mid-sized and compact cars, it does provide traction during all seasons without any additional modifications.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 2.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Subaru Legacy L, Subaru Legacy L special edition, Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT

What's New

The 2003 Subaru Legacy has more standard features and slightly altered trim levels available. Older GT and GT Limited models are now one 2.5 GT series. All GT Limited equipment is now standard. The 2.5 GT’s optional four-speed automatic comes with a Sportshift manual mode. Due to the 2.5 consolidation, the L Special edition package is new. Base L models are equipped with a standard CD player and key fob keyless entry. The 2.5 GT model also has an upgraded sound system with an in-dash six-disc CD changer. All models have a slightly different front-end style.

Exterior

The 2003 Subaru Legacy offers a wide array of exterior colors: mystic blue pearl, regatta red pearl, sea mist green pearl, silver stone metallic, and timberline green pearl. The standard tires and wheels package includes 15-inches steel wheels, a steel spare wheel, P205/60R H tires, all-season tires, full wheel covers, and a temporary spare tire. Variable intermittent wipers and a rear defogger are additional exterior standard features. The width is the same as the Outback at 68.7 inches, height is 55.7 inches, length is 187.4 inches, front track is 57.5 inches, rear track is the same at 57.5 inches, and the wheelbase is 104.3 inches. Cargo capacity with all seats in place is 12.4 cubic feet with maximum cargo capacity at a small 12.4 cubic feet.

Interior

The 2003 Subaru Legacy offers gray as the only interior color option. Standard bucket seat covering is cloth. Front head room measures at 38.9 inches, and front leg room is 43.3 inches. There is a folding with pass-thru center armrest rear seat and rear ventilation ducts. It offers standard power features such as remote power door locks, power mirrors, and one-touch power windows. Cruise control, front console with storage, front and rear cup holders, front door pockets, a remote trunk release, power steering, a 12-volt front power outlet, and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel add to the convenience. Interior comforts include air-conditioning, a trunk light, front reading lights, and dual illuminating vanity mirrors. A clock, tachometer, external temperature display, and low fuel level warning are the typical interior instrumentation devices. Four total speakers, 80 watts of stereo output, and an AM/FM in-dash single CD player stereo are the standard in-car entertainment features.

Performance & Handling

The 2003 Subaru Legacy comes with standard all-wheel drive, viscous center differential, five-speed manual transmission that can upgrade to four-speed automatic, and four-wheel independent suspension, modified MacPherson strut front suspension, and multilink rear suspension.

Safety

The 2003 Subaru Legacy offers safety and security base features that include four-wheel anti-lock brakes, child seat anchors, ventilated front disc/solid rear disc brakes, rear door child safety locks, daytime running lights, auto delay off headlamps, two front headrests, rear center three-point belt, front seatbelt pretensioners, electronic brake force distribution, emergency interior trunk release, and front height adjustable headrests. The sedan version has earned four stars in driver and front passenger frontal impact safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The wagon received four stars for front side-impact protection and five starts for rear side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the car ""good"" for front-offset crash protection. It is a ""best pick"" overall. The Identifix reliability rating receives four out of five in transmission and driveline, steering and suspension, brakes, heating and air-conditioning, starting and charging, and accessories categories. The engine received a four out of five rating due to a periodic problem with cylinder head gasket failure.
