2004 Subaru Legacy Review

Sporty and fuel-efficient.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2004 Subaru Legacy serves as a powerful, all-wheel-drive, midsize car. The 2004 version sports special features for the 35th Anniversary Edition. This includes many standard features for the 2.5 GT.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 2.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Subaru Legacy L sedan, Subaru Legacy GT sedan, Subaru Legacy L wagon, Subaru Legacy GT wagon

What's New

The last redesign for the Subaru Legacy took place in 2000. Subaru celebrates its 35 years of U.S. sales with a 35th Anniversary Edition of the Legacy L sedan and wagon. The new 2004 Subaru Legacy L includes the usual features plus the 35th-anniversary logo on the front fender, 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a sunroof, and embroidered floor mats. This year’s version also features new red interior trim in all models. The GT offers the option for ebony-patterned trim.

Exterior

The Subaru Legacy comes in two body styles: a sedan and a four-door wagon. Sedans have a 104.3-inch wheelbase and measure 184.4 inches long overall. The wagons stretch slightly longer to 187.4 inches overall. Sedans and wagons both reach 55.7 inches tall. The 2004 Subaru Legacy comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, all-season tires, and a rear defogger. The front on the 2.5 GT sedan includes standard projector-beam fog lights, a sport-tuned suspension, and five-spoke alloy wheels that hold 16-inch tires. The 2.5 GT sedan also provides a power glass sunroof.

Interior

The Subaru Legacy provides ample room for a small family, with bucket seats in the front and a bench seat in the back. The back seat features three-point reel seat belts. It comes standard with a trunk/hatch release, illuminated sun visor mirrors, air-conditioning, powered windows, and cruise control. The 35th Anniversary edition also features a sunroof and a Momo-designed steering wheel. The 2.5 GT models come with side-impact airbags, leather upholstery, heated mirrors and seats, and a six-disc CD player. Unfortunately, the back seat does not fold down to create extra storage. Overall trunk storage totals 12.4 cubic feet.

Performance & Handling

A 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 165 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque, powers all models. The most notable performance feature remains all-wheel drive for the sedan, which sets the 2004 Subaru Legacy apart from most compact and midsize cars. The four-cylinder engine keeps down fuel costs without losing power for navigating all-season terrain. Overall, the ride feels smooth and comfortable for a small family. Despite the all-wheel drive, the Legacy’s size and engine do not make it ideal for off-roading.

Safety

Every model comes with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, ventilated front disc brakes, and solid rear disc brakes. Other safety features include emergency interior trunk release, rear-door child safety locks, daytime running lights, auto delay-off headlamps, and child seat anchors. The L sedan receives a ""good"" rating in frontal-offset crash tests. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) awards the 2004 Subaru Legacy five out of five stars for passenger safety, four stars for driver safety, and four stars for rollover tests. The wagon rates slightly higher overall due to increased structural advantages during the side-impact crash tests for both the front end and back ends. The wagons enjoy slightly higher safety ratings, but overall all Legacy models test well for safety.

EPA Fuel Economy

Subaru Legacy L sedan: 19/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy GT sedan: 19/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy L wagon: 19/25 mpg city/highway
Subaru Legacy GT wagon: 18/24 mpg city/highway
