Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

Although the 2003 Suzuki Aerio is a worthwhile compact car, but it is a few steps behind industry leaders. Both the Aerio and the SX hatchback boast unique appearances and a uniquely large interior for its sizes. The sedan was introduced in 2002 at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show.

The Range

Body Styles: wagon
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Suzuki Aerio, Suzuki Aerio GS, Suzuki Aerio S, Suzuki Aerio SX

What's New

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio is a recent introduction to the market, so there aren’t many changes to the 2003 model; however, all-wheel drive is a new feature for 2003. Horsepower has been bumped up by four to 145 and torque raised up one lb-ft to 135 lb-ft. Cruise control buttons are now on the steering wheel, and there is a three-point seatbelt and headrest for the rear center seat. There is a new cloth design. The GS and SX models drop the rear seat armrest, but it gains a six-disc in-dash CD player and has an all-wheel drive option.

Exterior

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio gives drivers five exterior color scheme choices: black onyx, catseye blue metallic, racy red, silky silver metallic, and while pearl. The outer appearance is upright in stature compared to other small sedans. Unique design features include a body-colored bumper, triangular glass panes below the windshield corners, pronounced wheel flares, and multi-reflector headlights. The standard tires and wheels package includes 14-inch steel wheels, a null spare wheel, P185/65R14 tires, all-season tires, an inside mounted spare tire, full wheel covers, and a full size non-matching spare tire. A rear defogger is included along with variable intermittent wipers.

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio measures at 67.6 inches wide, 60.8 inches high, and 171.3 inches long with minimal ground clearance of 5.9 inches. Front track is 57.1 inches, rear track is 56.9 inches, and wheelbase is 97.6 inches. Cargo capacity with all seats in place is 14.6 cubic feet. Gross weight is 3616 pounds, and curb weight is 2641 pounds. Meanwhile, prism-style taillights round out the rear.

Interior

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio offers two interior color options: black and gray. The standard seat covering is cloth, and sedan and hatchback versions seat five occupants. Front head room measures at 40.6 inches, front hip room is 48.8 inches, front leg room is as roomy as the Grand Vitara at 41.4 inches, and front shoulder room is actually larger at 53.7 inches. The rear seats are split folding, and there is a folding center armrest. Power features include steering and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Additional interior comforts include air-conditioning, a trunk light, front reading lights, and dual vanity mirrors. In-car entertainment consists of six speakers and an AM/FM in-dash single CD player stereo.

Performance & Handling

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio features a MacPherson strut front suspension, MacPherson strut rear suspension, and a four-wheel independent suspension. Base engine size is a 2.0-liter with a double overhead cam. Torque measures at 136 ft-lb at 3000 rpm and horsepower is 145 at 5700 rpm. Front drive is a standard feature.

Safety

The 2003 Suzuki Aerio offers safety and security base features that include child seat anchors, ventilated front disc/rear drum brakes, rear door child safety locks, daytime running lights, two front headrests, three rear headrests, a rear center three-point belt, electronic brake force distribution, emergency interior trunk release, and front height adjustable headrests. Anti-lock brakes are an additional cost. Side-impact airbags are not available. IIHS crash frontal offset test rated ?good.? Side impact was not tested by IIHS, and the rear crash protection/head restraints tested only ?marginal.? Identifix rated five out of five in transmission and driveline, steering and suspension, brakes, heating and air-conditioning, starting and charging, and accessories reliability.
