2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara Review

Fun-filled SUV with impressive features for a great price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

At first glance the 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara simply looks like a larger version of the Suzuki Vitara. However, it comes with many more features that enhance the performance and appearance and appeal to more people.

The Grand Vitara comes in a two-wheel drive LX version or a four-wheel drive EX version. Both models contain a 2.5-liter V-6. Fuel economy for this crossover vehicle averages 19/22 mpg city/highway. The Suzuki Grand Vitara’s notable features follow Suzuki’s history of offering more for less money. The four-wheel-drive option available on several of the models also entices many people.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door SUV
Engine: 2.5-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, four-speed manual, five-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Suzuki Grand Vitara LX, Suzuki Grand Vitara EX

What's New

Suzuki’s 2004 Grand Vitara offers more seating, holding up to five adults. Both the taillights and headlights get redesigned for 2004. Silver roof rails and door handles, as well as a panic button added to the remote also provide new features. Both models now have a hard cover over the spare tire and heated side mirrors (the exception being the two-wheel drive LX). The EX now comes equipped with a power sunroof, fog lights, and a new rear spoiler.

Suzuki’s Grand Vitara sits on a 97.6-inch wheelbase with a total length of 164.5 inches and a height of 68 inches. The spare tire sits on the right-opening tailgate. The Grand Vitara EX sits on 16-inch all-season tires with alloy wheels while the Grand Vitara LX has 16-inch all-season tires on alloy wheels.

Variable intermittent wipers complete the windshield, with rear window wipers and a rear window defogger also standard. Privacy glass and a roof rack complete the vehicle.

The 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara uses a body-on-frame design with a solid rear axle, which ultimately translates to the smoother power in the performance and handling of the car.

Front bucket seats and a rear-folding seat allow seating for up to five adults. Cloth seating comes in a variety of colors.

2004 Suzuki Grand Vitaras come with power features, including remote power door locks and power windows with one-touch operation.

Passenger comfort is enhanced with interior air filtration, dual vanity mirrors, climate control with heat and air-conditioning, a lighted cargo area, and front reading lights. An AM/FM radio and in-dash CD player entertain with seven speakers and a subwoofer.

Cruise control and tilt steering enhance the driving experience. Storage includes front cup holders, front and rear door pockets, an overhead console storage area, and front seatback storage. Twelve-volt outlets sit in both the front and the rear cargo area.

Performance & Handling

The 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara runs on a 2.5-liter, double-overhead cam, six-cylinder engine, producing 165 horsepower with either a four-speed or five-speed automatic or manual transmission.

The ride feels a little choppy on uneven pavement, but not nearly as choppy as some other vehicles in its class thanks to the firm suspension system. The performance of the engine and transmission seems satisfactory and the shifting of the automatic transmission remains barely noticeable. The Grand Vitara feels light and comfortable overall and handles curves and turns with ease.

The excellent budget price of this SUV doesn’t mean that Suzuki overlooks safety features. Standard safety features for the 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara include child seat anchors to secure car seats to the frame of the vehicle, rear-door child safety locks to prevent children from opening the door, optional four-wheel anti-lock brakes, ventilated front disc and rear drum brakes, daytime running lights, and dusk-sensing headlights. Additional safety features include height-adjustable headrests in the front and rear, front seat belt pretensioners, and electronic brake force distribution.

The 2004 Grand Vitara receives four-star ratings in the passenger and driver, and five-star ratings in the side-impact front and side-impact rear NHTSA crash tests. It also receives a ""good"" rating, the highest, in the IIHS frontal-offset test.
