2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara Review

A capable and sturdy vehicle that suits families and off-road travelers.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The Suzuki Grand Vitara debuted in 1999 as a four-door SUV. The 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara provides a four-door, five-passenger SUV that features a sturdy body and frame with good handling ability. Although it does not have as much trunk space as some of its competitors, it offers a comfortable ride with easy maneuverability.

The Grand Vitara has become known for its well-made body and good standard interior features, as well as ease of handling in the city, on the highway, or in the bush. It makes a solid SUV choice for an affordable price.

The Range

Body Styles: SUV
Engines: 2.5-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Suzuki Grand Vitara LX, Suzuki Grand Vitara VX

What's New

The 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara provides a hardier vehicle than its predecessors. It gets larger as well, with roof rails and restyled head and taillights included as standard features.

The Grand Vitara uses 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires and a full-size spare mounted outside. The 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara also has privacy glass, skid plates, and a chrome grill. Optional features include alloy wheels, a roof rack, a trailer hitch receiver, a moonroof, front fog lights, and a rear window blind.

The interior of the Suzuki Grand Vitara features front cloth bucket seats with a center console and an overhead storage area. The rear has split-folding seats. Additional features for the 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara include power door locks and windows, a tilt-adjustable power steering wheel with cruise control, climate control with rear ventilation and interior air filtration, a clock, a tachometer, external temperature display, and an AM/FM radio with a CD player, seven speakers, a subwoofer, and audio controls on the wheel.

Performance & Handling

The V-6 engine offers moderate power but lacks the oomph of some of its competitors, especially when it comes to passing and changing lanes on the highway. The strut front independent suspension and solid live axle rear suspension provide a smooth ride. Steering feels light and responsive. The 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara maneuvers well around corners and it hugs the road. The Grand Vitara reaches a maximum towing capacity of 1500 pounds.

Safety features on the Suzuki Grand Vitara include front disc and rear drum brakes, child seat anchors and safety locks on the rear door, keyless entry, dusk-sensing headlamps, daytime running lights, front and rear adjustable headrests, a rear defogger, and rear wipers. A security system and anti-lock braking system remain optional for the Grand Vitara.

The Grand Vitara has an NHTSA rating of four stars out of five for driver and passenger safety, and five stars for side impacts, both front and rear. The IIHS gives the Grand Vitara an Acceptable rating for frontal-offset tests and a Poor score for side impacts, rear crash protection, and head restraint.

One recall on the 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara relates to the front disc brakes, which break when experiencing extreme use. This failure results in an inability to use the brakes and a possible unexpected crash.
