1997 Suzuki Swift Review

The Suzuki Cheap would have been a better name.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1997 Suzuki Swift was branded inaccurately; the entry-level two-door hatchback, shouldn't be called ?Swift.? Instead, it should be called ?Cheap.? Even though the Geo Metro is cheaper, it only has a three-cylinder engine with a puny 55 horsepower. The Swift, on the other hand, is still mighty affordable and comes with 70 horsepower. Aside from the price, the other major feature of this car is the great gas mileage: 39/43 mpg city/highway. There are no trim packages and only one base model.

The Range

Body Styles: hatchback
Engines: 1.3-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, three-speed automatic
Models: Suzuki Swift

What's New

The 1997 Suzuki Swift doesn't bring anything new to the table with a car this stripped down. The only updates are new seat coverings and new paint colors: Victory Red and Bright Teal Metallic.

The 1997 Suzuki Swift comes with exterior features like the black front and rear bumpers and black bodyside moldings. It has 13-inch wheels and comes with a compact, temporary spare tire and measures 62.6 inches wide, 54.7 inches tall, and 149.4 inches long on a 93-inch wheelbase.

The 1997 Suzuki Swift seats four with cloth-covered bucket seats up front and a full bench in the rear. Basic features include four-way driver and front passenger seats, a rear window defroster, power steering, and a day/night rearview mirror. A cloth front seat trim is with a vinyl door trim insert, full cloth headliner, and trim on the carpet floor. Other interior features include manual door locks, a 12-volt power outlet, manual front windows, and rear fixed windows. The slim optional features include air-conditioning and an AM/FM/cassette audio system. Meanwhile, storage options include a glove box, front cup holder, and dual door bins.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Suzuki Swift gets a sole engine option is a 1.3-liter four-cylinder with 70 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque. The standard gearbox is a five-speed manual, but there is also an option of a three-speed automatic transmission. It also comes equipped with front-wheel drive, front strut suspension and strut rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, and power brakes. Although driving is unremarkable, it gets from point A to point B in cheap style.

The 1997 Suzuki Swift comes equipped with driver and front passenger airbags, daytime running lamps, front disc/rear drum brakes, and fixed front headrests. Warning gauges include oil pressure, low battery, lights on, and key in ignition. The lone safety option is four-wheel ABS. There are not any government safety ratings available for this car.
