2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport Review

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport is the trim line of choice for those wanting a sportier SX4.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport reflects the Suzuki brand’s honest attempt to make an appealing sedan out of its SX4 line. Suzuki introduced the SX4 in 2008 as a sportier option for those wanting a bit more performance out of their subcompact. The Sport model is the only trim in the line that offers front-wheel drive, a smartly-tuned suspension that increases handling efficiency, and a brace in the trunk that makes it more rigid than the hatchback model.

The Sport features a decrease in cargo space and a lower fuel economy, making it the least-practical model in the SX4 line. However, if you’re looking for a pretty fun ride that tends to perform at the same level as the competition, the 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport might be the sedan for you.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door sedan
Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic transmission
Models: Suzuki SX4 Sedan

What's New

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport is a new addition to the SX4 line. It has a different suspension and an ""Aero"" body kit that slightly changes its appearance, differentiating it from the other trim lines.

Exterior

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport is a four-door sedan equipped with an ""Aero"" body kit that makes it look and feel sportier. The car is lower to the ground than the other models and doesn’t include skid plates like the hatchback, so you may have some instances of grinding when handling speed bumps. The Sport model is equipped with 17-inch steel tires, an upgrade from the 16-inch tires offered on other models. It also features a tightly-tuned suspension that gives it better handling and performance.

Interior

The interior of the 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport is clean and stylish for the most part. All models come equipped with a center-mounted CD changer that is compact and clean but lacks an auxiliary jack, which may turn off younger customers drawn to the sportiness of the vehicle. Also, there is a lot of cheap plastic that distracts from the good interior design.

There is plenty of head and legroom throughout the body, but cargo space is a bit of a concern in the Sport model. Due to the back brace in the trunk that makes the frame sturdier, the back seats do not fold down as they do in other sedan and hatchback models. This cuts the luggage space down to 14 cubic feet, but this is quite large in comparison to some of the competition.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Crossover comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 143 horsepower with 136 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual standard, and an optional four-speed automatic. The Sport model gets better fuel economy than the hatchback designs, but this is still below average.

The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine has more power than most subcompact cars, but any extra power you may expect is absorbed by the massive curb weight of the vehicle. Acceleration is no better than any other subcompact on the market. If you want better performance, buy a Sport that has the five-speed manual transmission, which give smoother shifting and more control.

The Sport model, with its lower body positioning and 17-inch wheels, grips the pavement like glue. Large potholes will barely make you blink. You’ll feel little body roll, even when tearing into corners at speed. However, the steering is a bit disappointing, especially for a trim line designated as ""Sport.""

Safety

The 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport comes equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), front-seat side airbags, and full side-curtains for the rear-seat passengers. Traction and stability control are only available as standard equipment on the Touring model, so you’ll have to shell out some extra dough for that extra protection. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport four out of five stars for passenger and driver protection in front off-set collisions, and five out of five for side-impact crash tests.
