2010 Suzuki SX4 Sportback Review

Much improved economy hatchback could still use some work

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2010 Suzuki SX4 Sportback is a compact four-door hatchback that comes with either front- or all-wheel drive. Propelled by 2.0-liter I-4 engine coupled to either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the Suzuki SX4 Sportback is available as a front- or all-wheel-drive vehicle.

Taller than similar models, the Suzuki SX4 Sportback's body length is also shorter. As a low cost, aggressive, tough, and competent vehicle, the hatchback fuses performance with functionality and even adds a bit of swagger. Safety systems are above average, as is its fuel economy that comes in at 23 mpg city / 30 mpg highway.

New for 2010

For 2010, the Suzuki SX4 SportBack received new exterior styling, a new 150-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, and two new transmissions. Interior features were also improved, and a new areo kit is gives the hatchback a sportier look.

Essentials

Engine: 2.0L I-4
Transmissions: 6-speed manual, CVT
Body Style: 4-door hatchback
Trim: Base Hatchback

On the Outside

The Suzuki SX4 SportBack eliminated the roof racks and added an aero kit and lowered stance.

From the Inside

The Suzuki SX4 SportBack features a quality interior, replete with reliable materials and ample head and leg room for tall drivers. Standard features include a new gauge cluster and increased navigation functionality.

Driving Performance

While the all-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 SportBack suffers from an extra 100 pounds of curb weight, it still feels lively and peppy, thanks to stiffer suspension and a lower stance. The new 150-horsepower 2.0-liter engine paired to the new six-speed manual transmission or the new CVT are badly needed improvements.

Safety Equipment

Standard safety systems on the Suzuki SX4 Sportback include standard stability control, as well as driver and front passenger front, side, and curtain airbags.

Gas Mileage

22 mpg city/30 mpg highway

Plusses

  • Lots of interior features
  • New engine and transmissions

Minuses

  • Heavy curb weight with AWD
  • Engine power still a bit slim

Rating

Much improved economy hatchback could still use some work
