1999 Toyota Avalon Review

A reliable sedan that provides a comfortable ride, good acceleration and speed, and plenty of options.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1999 Toyota Avalon is a four-door full-size sedan and is closely related to the more popular and smaller Toyota Camry. It replaced the Toyota Cressida within the lineup. The first generation models included all of those built from 1994 through 1999. These had a front-engine and front-drive layout with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission.

The 1999 Toyota Avalon is a notch above the very popular Camry within the Toyota lineup with a range of features often competing with entry-level luxury vehicles from luxury brands like Acura or Audi. It is also known for its reliability.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic with overdrive
Models: Toyota Avalon XL, Toyota Avalon XLS

What's New

The 1999 Toyota Avalon is in its final model year for the second generation. As such, changes were limited.

Exterior

The 1999 Toyota Avalon is a full-size four-door sedan with relatively large dimensions. The profile is fairly plain for models around this year. It has a sharper front end, a cockpit toward the center, and significant overhang, which includes all of the long trunk area. It is available in a range of colors.

Interior

Inside the 1999 Toyota Avalon is roomy and seats five comfortably. It features comfortable seats, heated mirrors, tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, an array of storage compartments, and more. Buyers can choose from a range of trim styles.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Toyota Avalon has a 200-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration is quick but very smooth, geared more toward luxury than performance. It provides a very comfortable ride and handles well. The dimensions, especially extended trunk, can make it a little difficult to park when backing in or parallel parking, but it maneuvers well in traffic.

Safety

Some safety features include front airbags, side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

EPA Fuel Economy

Toyota Avalon: 21/29 mpg city/highway
