2003 Toyota Camry Solara Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2003 Toyota Camry Solara is a midsize convertible and coupe derived from the Camry. The coupe and the convertible are offered in SLE and SE trims.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual gearbox
Models: Camry Solara SE, Camry Solara SLE

What's New

For 2003, the Solara receives daytime running lamps that can be turned off and a redesigned front fascia with restyled headlamps, bumper, and grille. The manual transmission is discontinued on the V-6 versions.

Exterior

The 2003 Toyota Camry Solara has softer design lines, which give it a more sleek personality and a more potent stance. The front fascia is dominated by the grille and small headlamps. The aggressive grille is complemented by the headlamps that make use of a four-bulb configuration. There are also fog lamps, and the air intake just below the bumper.

Interior

The 2003 Toyota Camry Solara has limited room in the rear with the leg room at 43.3 inches, hip room at 53.6 inches, and shoulder room at 55.3 inches. The passenger seat in front cannot be adjusted since it does not have a slide-forward mechanism. The backseat can be folded to give way to extra cargo space. The SE makes use of cloth upholstery while other features like air-conditioning, CD player, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and tilting steering wheel are standard. The SLE adds perforated-leather treatment for its seats, eight-way power adjustments for the driver seat, heated mirrors, and auto climate control. The coupe offers a storage space of 13.8 cubic feet in the trunk. It's a lot more limited for the convertible with only 8.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Performance & Handling

The 2003 Toyota Camry Solara SE has a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder power plant under its hood as standard. It gives out 157 horsepower while revving at 5600 rpm and produces a torque of 162 lb-ft while revving at 4000 rpm. The V-6 engine with a displacement of three liters produces 198 horsepower while revving at 5300 rpm, and gives out a torque of 212 lb-ft while going at 4400 rpm. This more potent engine is under the hood of the SLE and comes as an option for the SE. The engines are mated with either five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission for the coupe version. The convertible version only comes with an automatic transmission. Automotive critics sometimes underestimate the two-door models, but these machines can offer a ton even when the sticker price might hurt the bank account. The suspension is quite taut but the ride remains to be beautiful even when passing over imperfections on the road. It handles with proficiency on straights and curves. The headroom in front is not the best especially for taller drivers. Rear seat passengers are likely to complain about their head against the rear window. The seats though are pretty comfortable.

Safety

The 2003 Toyota Camry Solara V-6 models come with Anti-lock Brakes System as standard. This feature is an option for the SE with a four-cylinder engine. Another option is to include side-impact airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rates the coupe with five of five stars for rear seat passengers on side impact collisions. The NHTSA gives it three of five stars for front seat passenger safety on side impact collisions.

EPA Fuel Economy

Toyota Camry Solara SE Coupe: 21/30 mpg city/highway
Toyota Camry Solara SE Convertible: 20/28 mpg city/highway
Toyota Camry Solara SE, SLE Coupe, V-6: 17/25 mpg city/highway
Toyota Camry Solara SE, SLE Convertible, V-6: 17/24 mpg city/highway
