2004 Toyota Camry Solara Review

An interesting look with interior comfort.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara is a midsize couple/convertible that was created for sport-minded drivers. It convincingly blends a sporty look and style with spacious practicality and performance. It has been redesigned for 2004 to be sportier, more powerful, and more refined than ever before. This second-generation model is curvier than the previous version and comes in three trim levels: the SLE, SE, and SE Sport. Each trim showcases a separate interior. The 3.3-liter, V-6 engine has more horsepower this year with a brand new five-speed sequential automatic transmission. The familiar four-cylinder engine has also remained available.

The Range

Body styles: two-door coupe, two-door convertible
Engines: 3.3-liter V-6, 2.4-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, four-speed automatic, five-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Toyota Camry Solara SE coupe, Toyota Camry Solara SE convertible, Toyota Camry Solara SE Sport, Toyota Camry Solara SE V-6, Toyota Camry Solara SE Sport V-6, Toyota Camry Solara SLE coupe, Toyota Camry Solara SLE convertible, Toyota Camry Solara SLE V-6

What's New

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara has been modified to start its second generation. It features a sleek design, a lot of additional features, and revamped upscale interior treatments for each trim. It has been built on a new platform, with Lexus-like styling, for a ride that is more refined and even more powerful now with a new V-6 engine. With some added size, it has never been more comfortable to ride in.

Exterior

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara's designers have mixed rounded and curved-in surfaces through the length. Starting at the grille is a pronounced ""V"" shape that separates elongated headlights shaped like the human eye. Fog lamps give a wide and aggressive appearance. Round rear corners unify into an integrated bumper. Below the triangular rear quarters is an upswept belt line. A reduced bumper height gives it a sportier stance. The redesign also includes narrower body gaps. It rides a 107.2-inch wheelbase that is 2.1 inches longer than its predecessor. It stands 56.1-inches tall and it is 192.6-inches long, making it 0.5-inches taller and 1.1 inches longer than the previous Solara. Each Solara model comes standard with all-disc brakes. The vehicle’s suspension is performance-tuned but a sports-tuned suspension is available with the SE Sport package. The sports-tuned suspension has stiffer springs, a body kit with multiple pieces, 17-inch wheels, and sport pedals. A rear spoiler is also available as an option.

Interior

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara seats five occupants. The redesign has allowed for an increase of interior storage space with two-unit console storage now available. The instrument panel has been restyled with a center-mounted display. The rear seat has become much more accommodating for passengers. The back seat has a fairly decent 36.9 inches of headroom, very comparable to competitors like the Sebring Coupe and Accord Coupe. The biggest benefit of the size increase is the comfort provided by more shoulder and hip room. Trunk space totals 13.8 cubic feet. Trunk space can be expanded if unused rear seats are folded down. Interior treatment is different for each of the three Solara models. For example, the SE has a brushed-aluminum and silver-finished trim, the SLE showcases a wood grain trim, and the SE Sport has a very unique black graphite-accentuated trim. It comes standard with front-seat airbags, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, air-conditioning with cabin air filtration, power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, keyless remote entry, fold-down rear seats, and an AM/FM stereo with CD player. New options for 2004 are XM Satellite Radio and a DVD-based navigation system with a 6.7-inch viewing screen.

Performance & Handling

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara starts quietly and offers a very refined ride. There is no jilting, jarring, or unsettling vibration, even when road bumps are encountered. It isn’t aggressively sporty but still yields power. It is best for cruising and handles curves and bends very well.

Safety

The 2004 Toyota Camry Solara comes standard with anti-lock brakes and side-impact airbags. Side curtain-type airbags are available as an option.
