2005 Toyota Camry Solara Review

Classy and sporty luxury car with practicality, reliability, and style at a very reasonable price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Toyota Camry Solara proves ideal for drivers who seek a vehicle with a bit more flash and power. A restyled Camry Solara debuted in 2004, looking dramatically different from the 2002 to 2003 version of the car with a curvier body and a more refined and sporty look. This vehicle typically appeals to buyers visually drawn to sportier-looking cars but also who desire a more affordable, family friendly vehicle. This vehicle perfectly blends pizzazz with spatial practicality.

The Solara is American-made, manufactured in Kentucky, with all engineering and design also taking place in the U.S. Built on an identical platform to the 2002 Camry sedan, the Toyota Solara initially only came as a two-door coupe, however a convertible later debuted for drivers who wanted the liberation of an open-air ride. The convertible now makes up the bulk of this vehicle’s sales.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible Transmissions: five-speed manual, optional four-speed automatic, five-speed sequential shift automatic
Models: Toyota Camry Solara SE, Toyota Camry Solara SE Sport, Toyota Camry Solara SLE, Toyota Camry Solara V-6

What's New

Since the 2005 Toyota Camry Solara got completely redesigned in 2004, few changes have been made to the 2005 model. The updated Solara looks larger with a round sleek shape and much more room up front than previous generations. Some added features to the 2005 Solara include a gearshift handle, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the SE Convertible’s parking brake handle.

The Solara comes in three trim levels: the SE, SE Sport, and SLE.

The SE Sport gets built specifically for a driver who wants more than the typical Camry. The suspension is much firmer, the vehicle’s tires measure larger, and the car has a unique-looking lower body and interior trim style.

The SLE marks the fully loaded luxury edition that compares to the Lexus SC430 coupe at a fraction of the cost.

Exterior

This car has rounded and curved-in surfaces flowing through the length of the vehicle. A very distinct ""V"" shape begins at the grille, separating stretched out headlights. Fog lamps convey a wider and aggressive look.

The round rear corners unify on the bumper. This vehicle has an overall length of 192.5 inches and a height of 56.1 inches. For a sportier look, the bumper height looks shorter and the body gaps have been narrowed.

Every Solara comes with all-disc brakes. The SE Sport features a firmer suspension with more rigid springs, larger 17-inch alloy wheels with aluminum-trimmed pedals, and a six-piece body kit. Convertibles include a standard rear spoiler.

Interior

The Solara coupe seats up to five people, while the convertible accommodates only four occupants. Trunk space for the coupe measures 13.8 cubic feet. The convertible trunk space totals 11.7 cubic feet. The instrument panel features a multi-functional display and comes mounted in the center.

Each model of the Solara features its own unique interior surface treatment. The SE trim uses silver-metallic, the SLE has a wood grain trim, and the SE Sport highlights black graphite-like trim. All models come with optional XM Satellite Radio and a DVD-based navigation system with a 6.5-inch viewing screen.

Obviously, with an open top, the convertible provides about two additional inches of rear headroom in comparison to the coupe. The convertibles also include a magnetic front seat belt guide for easier rear seat access.

Performance & Handling

The base engine of this car, a 157-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine can either be matched with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic transmission.

If that doesn’t provide enough power, the vehicle also offers with the same 225-horsepower, 3.3-liter V-6 that powers the Lexus ES 330, and it mates with a five-speed automatic transmission set with a sequential automatic gearshift also known as Multi-Mode Transmission (MMT).

Convertibles only offer the V-6 engine.

Safety

This car has seat-mounted side-impact airbags and anti-lock brakes as standard features. Coupes include optional side curtain airbags. The V-6-powered SLE models have Vehicle Stability Control available as well.
