2006 Toyota Camry Solara Review

An elegant car with a luxurious interior.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2006 Toyota Camry Solara is introduced as a more sophisticated and sportier cousin to the sedate Camry family sedan. It has been available since 1999, and serves as a well-built and reliable vehicle, but it somehow lacks the style and fun buyers expect from a convertible or coupe.

In 2004, Toyota overhauled the model and managed to make it more appealing. It introduces better suspension and a larger V-6 engine. The convertible gets a better ride, and engineers increase its rigidity. These improvements make both models a lot more desirable, while still managing to appeal to a wide audience.

The Range

Body Styles: Convertible, Coupe
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: Camry Solara SE, Camry Solara SE Sport, Camry Solara SE V6, Camry Solara SE Sport V6, Camry Solara SLE, Camry Solara SLE V6

What's New

For 2006, the SE and SE Sport come fitted with standard power-adjustable lumbar support for the driver’s seat. The optional automatic transmission for four-cylinder models upgrades to a five-speed transmission.

Exterior

The 2006 Toyota Camry Solara shows off long flowing lines and includes a mixture of concave and convex surfaces. It sits on a 107.1-inch wheelbase and measures 192.5 inches long. The base model coupe comes equipped with 16-inch wheels; power windows, locks, and mirrors; and keyless entry. The SE Sport has a firmer suspension and 17-inch wheels, as well as an exterior body kit. The SE convertible features a power cloth top, and the top-of-the-range SLE coupe includes a moonroof.

Interior

The 2006 Toyota Camry Solara SE base-level coupe offers cruise control, a six-speaker CD stereo, a multifunction trip computer, and steering wheel audio controls. The SE Sport has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The SLE coupes and convertibles both employ automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, wood grain trim, and a premium audio system with a six-disc CD changer. The V-6 model comes with leather seating.

The build quality looks exceptionally good, and all trim levels feature metallic accents. The sportier models have graphite accents, while the SLE trims come with premium wood finishes. The front seats offer plenty of room for even the very tallest of drivers, but the back seats feel somewhat cramped. As a pinch, the coupe can seat three passengers in the back, whereas the convertible only seats two. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better interior in this price range, and this is where this car really excels, even though it faces relatively little competition in this class. In fact all the models come well-finished and use high-quality plastics. The 2006 Toyota Camry Solara looks surprisingly practical, as it has a reasonable amount of room in the back seat, although it may feel somewhat uncomfortable for full-size adults on longer drives. Toyota includes most of the features a buyer could want. Even though the car lacks a distinctive look, it does offer quality, value, and performance.

Performance & Handling

The 2006 Toyota Camry Solara SE Sport coupe benefits from a firm suspension, larger and sportier wheels, and an interesting black graphite interior trim. The coupe comes in SE, SE Sport, and SLE trims, while the convertible offers just the SE and SLE versions.

The Toyota Camry Solara offers a comfortable and controlled ride, and if you choose the SE Sport model you'll find it relatively nimble and fun to drive, while still remaining well-mannered. The V-6 engine offers a considerable amount of power, but it would benefit from a manual gearbox. All in all, it serves as a very safe sports car.

Safety

2006 Toyota Camry Solara’s standard features include four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and front and side-impact airbags. Coupe models can be fitted with side curtain airbags, protecting both front and back passengers. The SLE model can be fitted with combined electronic stability and traction control. This car achieves perfect ratings in all of its crash tests.
