2006 Toyota Camry Review

An excellent, practical, and reliable family car.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2006 Toyota Camry represents a very well-known midsize family sedan and has a wide appeal due to its safety, comfort, and value. Buyers of this particular model expect a vehicle that will perform well for many years.

It doesn’t have anything inspiring to look at, but when compared to earlier models, it does feature better styling, less road noise, improved performance, and a greater number of safety features. It makes the perfect car if you don't really mind what it looks like and place more concern on comfort, reliability, and interior space. The 2006 Toyota Camry suits the average family. The rear seats fold down to supplement the cargo space in the trunk which expands to offer 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

The Range

Body Styles: Midsize sedan
Engines: 2.4-liter, 3.0-liter V-6, 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: Camry Standard, Camry LE, Camry SE, Camry XLE

What's New

In 2006, the Camry gets a navigation system available as a stand-alone option for the SE V-6 trim.

Exterior

The 2006 Toyota Camry sits on a 107.1-inch wheelbase and measures 189.2 inches long. The Standard and LE sedans have standard 15-inch tires, while more luxurious models use either 16-inch or 17-inch tires. The LE comes with keyless entry and color-keyed exterior mirrors, while the SE includes a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a different grille, and a rear spoiler.

Interior

The 2006 Toyota Camry's build quality seems extremely high, and the cabin employs an intuitive design, so you won't have to hunt around for various controls. The 2006 Toyota Camry offers impressive amounts of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. Its back seat has to be one of the largest of any midsize family sedan. If you opt for the navigation system, you'll find it very easy to use and read.

The 2006 Toyota Camry standard trim comes with power locks and windows, a CD player, and cruise control, and offers very few options for upgrades. The LE includes a power driver’s seat, while the SE has a different upholstery and interior trim. The XLE comes with automatic climate control, a better audio system, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The XLE V-6 model features leather seating. Optional upgrades include heated front seats, a sunroof, leather seating, an in-dash CD changer, and a DVD-based navigation system.

Performance & Handling

Three different engines are available for the 2006 Toyota Camry, including a 2.4-liter engine that produces 154 hp and pairs with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Most buyers find this perfectly suitable for their needs. The 3.0-liter, V-6 engine generates 190 hp and comes available for the LE and XLE trims. The 3.3-liter, V-6 engine only comes on the SE model and generates 210 hp. Both of the larger engines use the automatic transmission.

The 2006 Toyota Camry isn't a particularly sporty car because it serves a different purpose. Toyota focuses on making sure owners have a smooth and comfortable ride, and this car seems perfect for the daily commute. It gets you to and from the office in comfort. The standard four-cylinder engine provides perfectly adequate acceleration for most people, but if you choose the more powerful V-6 engines you'll find it has plenty of power, but lacks the acceleration seen in similar models fitted with V-6 engines.

Safety

All 2006 Toyota Camry models come standard with anti-lock brakes. Optional extras for all models include full-length side curtain airbags and front-seat side airbags. The V-6 models offer the option of stability control. The 2006 Toyota Camry rates highly on government safety tests, achieving a perfect five-star score for frontal-impact protection. Side-impact testing earns it four stars for front-seat occupants and three stars for rear passengers. Frontal-offset testing gives it the highest rating possible, as do side-impact tests, provided the Camry comes equipped with the optional side airbags. When tested without the side-airbags it gets a poor rating.

EPA Fuel Economy

Camry: 21/31 mpg city/highway
Camry LE: 21/31 mpg city/highway
Camry SE: 21/31 mpg city/highway
Camry LE V-6: 19/27 mpg city/highway
Camry XLE: 21/31 mpg city/highway
Camry SE V-6: 18/27 mpg city/highway
