2008 Toyota Camry Review

Has extremely high safety ratings with plenty of interior and exterior features.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2008 Toyota Camry is a simple, reliable car with no new features for the model year. It makes up for lack of features with plenty of exterior and interior options, high performance, exceptional safety ratings, and average fuel economy.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 2.4-liter inline-four, 3.5-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, six-speed auto, five-speed auto, CVT auto
Models: CE, LE, SE, LE V-6, SE V-6, XLE, XLE V-6

What's New

The Toyota Camry does not receive any new features for 2008.

Exterior

The 2008 Toyota Camry comes in five exterior colors. The exterior features include halogen headlamps with an auto-on and-off feature, daytime running lamps to increase visibility during the day, high solar energy absorbing glass, color-keyed power mirrors, and variable intermittent windshield wipers. Heated outside mirrors are optional as well as 16-inch alloy wheels. The standard 16-inch steel wheels come with all-season tires for every month of the year. A temporary spare tire is also included. The SE and SE V-6 models include foglights and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Interior

The 2008 Toyota Camry comes with front bucket seats with driver height adjustability and lumbar support, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with fabric seat trim on all seats. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable and telescoping. Audio controls are present on the steering wheel as well. The clock is digital, and the Optitron gauges have twin trip meters and an outside temperature display. The windows are powered and include a driver’s side auto-down feature. The door locks are powered and include an anti-lockout feature. The dashboard has a tire pressure monitoring system, which indicates when a tire needs more air. The audio system is an AM/FMCD/MP3/WMA player with six speakers and includes an auxiliary audio jack. The illuminated glove box is lockable. A premium JBL audio system is optional on the LE and SE models, along with a voice-activated navigation system in the SE or XLE. A power tilt-and-slide sunroof, leather-trimmed interior, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and heated outside mirrors are also optional. The LE and LE V-6 offer an eight-way, power driver’s seat, and remote keyless entry. The XLE adds glossy, wood-grain interior trim and has the automatic transmission standard. Leather is standard for the XLE V-6. Both XLE models add dual-zone, automatic climate control with an electronic ion filter, a six-CD changer, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity, power passenger seat and sunroof, split 40/20/40 reclining rear seat, reading lamps, manual rear window sunshade, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 Toyota Camry comes with either a 2.4-liter, inline-four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine. The inline-four engine is rated at 158 horsepower, which provides 161 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine is rated at 268 horsepower, which provides for 248 lb-ft of torque. The optional hybrid engine is rated at 187 horsepower, which provides for 138 lb-ft of torque. Buyers have a choice of four different transmissions: a five-speed manual, six-speed auto, five-speed auto, or a CVT auto for the hybrid models. The Camry is front-wheel drive and includes an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and an independent dual-link rear suspension. Both the front and rear have stabilizer bars. The steering is variable assisted power rack-and-pinion type. Also included are power front ventilated and rear solid disc brakes with brake assist. A battery saver feature is included as well. A hybrid engine is also available for the Camry sedan.

Safety

The 2008 Toyota Camry is extremely safe with five stars in most categories, including driver front- and side-impact and passenger front- and side-impact ratings. The rollover rating is a still-impressive four stars. The driver and front passenger get an advanced airbag system with occupant sensor as well as seat-mounted side airbags. Front and rear side curtain airbags are also included. The driver gets a knee airbag in addition to the rest. The Toyota Camry includes the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system and electronic brake force distribution. The rear door locks have a child safety feature, and the LATCH child restraint system is included. Daytime running lamps help the vehicle remain visible in daylight. Vehicle stability and traction control are optional safety additions for the Camry.
