1996 Toyota Celica Review

A zippy little ride.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1996 Toyota Celica is available as coupe, convertible, or hatchback. It offers an attractive, modern looking vehicle at a fairly decent value. It also has the same reliability found on so many other Toyota models and offers a more stylish alternative to the somewhat ho hum designs found in many Toyota vehicles. It comes in multiple trims, including the ST, GT, ST 25th Anniversary and GT 25th Anniversary. However, this style does come at a slightly higher price tag. It is a solid, midrange passenger vehicle. However, the high-end models also don’t cost as much as some of the fully-loaded Toyotas, so there are no value problems in that regard.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible, hatchback
Engines: 1.8-liter four-cylinder, 2.2-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Toyota Celica ST, Toyota Celica GT, Toyota Celica ST 25th Anniversary, Toyota Celica GT 25th Anniversary

What's New

The 1996 Toyota Celica receives some minor styling redesigns and additional color options.

Exterior

The 1996 Toyota Celica is available as a coupe, hatchback, or convertible that measures 177 inches in total length. The design is very curved and graceful, making it one of the more modern looking vehicles in the Toyota line up. Standard features include tinted glass, remote trunk release, power exterior mirrors, and 15-inch wheels. Optional equipment, on the other hand, include alloy wheels, fog lights, and a rear spoiler.

Interior

The 1996 Toyota Celica offers a good variety of features, but the standards features only include AM/FM radio and power mirrors across all models. Optional equipment includes cruise control, air-conditioning, power windows, power locks, CD player, and a cassette player. The higher-end 25th Anniversary models don’t really add anything beyond keyless entry to the options list. However, the Anniversary models do make almost all the optional equipment into standard features.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Toyota Celica has decent overall performance and offers two engine choices: a 1.8-liter four-cylinder producing 130 hp at 5400 rpm and 145 lb-ft of torque and the slightly more powerful 2.2-liter four-cylinder. Both engine options provide decent, if not particularly remarkable, acceleration, and speed. The turning and handling are good but not particularly unusual for a vehicle in this price range. As expected, the larger engine reduces the fuel economy quite a bit.

Safety

The 1996 Toyota Celica is equipped with dual-front airbags as standard equipment. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are available as optional equipment. There are no published crash test results.

EPA Fuel Economy

Toyota Celica, 1.8-liter four-cylinder: 23/31 mpg city/highway
Toyota Celica, 2.2-liter four-cylinder: 18/26 mpg city/highway
