After 35 years of production the 2005 Toyota Celica marks the final model of Toyota’s longest enduring sport coupe in the U.S. and Canada. Since 1971, the Toyota Celica has been the car of choice for buyers favoring a stylish, low-slung sport coupe.

The Celica comes in a 140-hp GT model with a standard five-speed manual transmission or a 180-hp GT-S model with a six-speed manual transmission. Both offer the option of an automatic transmission, with the GT-S offering manual shifting buttons on the steering wheel.

Other options shared by both models include front side airbags, ABS, remote keyless entry, xenon headlamps, a sunroof, and a rear spoiler. Additionally, the Action Package remains available for all models, providing rocker panels, aggressive bumpers, clear tail lamp lenses, color-keyed headlight trim, a larger hood, and a rear spoiler.

The GT-S features a few exclusive options of its own such as 16-inch wheels, rather than the standard 15-inch, and leather upholstery.

What's New

This sporty four-cylinder hatchback coupe got redesigned in 2000 and a slight facelift in 2003 with the addition of newly updated front facade and high intensity discharge headlights. Some critics of the Celica complain about the car’s price, plodding, and heavy weight. The 2000 redesign addresses these complaints and results in a stylish and nimble vehicle that especially appeals to younger car-buyers. No new features enhance the final model of the Celica.


The cab-forward shape of this vehicle features a stylish look with design elements inspired by racecars. There are striking stark contrasts between the car’s low nose, short overhang, razor-sharp panels, dramatically dipped curves, tall tail, and drastically lowered front fascia that make this car look great.

The GT-S includes standard fog lights, and both models offer an optional power sunroof and rear spoiler. Both models use 15-inch tires, but the rubber on the GT-S tire measures wider and wraps over alloy wheels. Toyota also offers the aforementioned option of 16-inch tires for the GT-S.


The interior of this car oozes style while maintaining comfort and functionality. Drivers may feel like they are in a pilot’s cockpit thanks to the huge analog gages, bucket seats, down swept dashboard layout, and silver/metallic accents.

The center console looks sizeable enough to hold perhaps eight CD cases in addition to two oversize cups. It offers a respectable amount of cargo space with the rear seats pushed down. When in use, though, the rear seats seem so small that barely enough space remains for extra passengers to sit comfortably.

Up to four occupants fit into the Celica, but back passengers may find the tight squeeze unpleasant. Small children and cargo fit best in the back seat.

The GT model includes a six-speaker CD stereo, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent windshield wipers, air-conditioning, and power mirrors. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, drilled aluminum panels, power windows and locks, cruise control, JBL Premium audio, and optional leather-trimmed seats all provide features for the GT-S model.

Performance & Handling

The GT contains a four–cylinder, 1.8-liter, dual-overhead camshaft engine that rates at 140-hp with 125 lb-ft of torque. The GT-S packs more power with a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine rated at 180-hp with 122 lb-ft of torque.

A five-speed manual gearbox comes standard on the GT. The GT-S features a six-speed manual shift. A four-speed automatic transmission remains available for both models if desired.


This vehicle earns four out of five stars in U.S. crash tests for driver and front-seat passenger frontal collision protection. Front disc and rear drum brakes come standard with the GT model while the GT-S model has a full set of disc brakes. Anti-lock brakes and side-impact bags remain optional equipment for both Celica models. Both models also include daytime running lights.
