2002 Toyota Corolla Review

Fuel economy, ease of driving, great maneuverability and a smooth, quiet ride make a happy car owner.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Toyota Corolla has been around 1968 and has earned the honor of being the best-selling nameplate in the history of automobiles. It has appeared as a hatchback, coupe, wagon, and sedan. The 2002 Toyota Corolla sells only as a sedan but in three trim levels: CE, S, and LE. The Corolla encounters a bit more competition now than in its initial years, but it still deserves consideration.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 1.8-liter I-4
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, three-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Toyota Corolla CE, Toyota Corolla S, Toyota Corolla LE

What's New

The 2002 Toyota Corolla sees no major changes this model year. The only change concerns the pricing for the optional value packages which lowers for all trims.

Exterior

The 2002 Toyota Corolla classifies as a subcompact sedan and a near-twin of the Chevrolet Prizm. A California plant serves as the birthplace to both automobiles, although some Corollas come from Ontario, Canada as well. The Corolla looks very clean and conventional in its styling. It rides on a 97-inch wheelbase and measures 174 inches long. The Corolla measures 66.7 inches wide and 53.7 inches tall. The S includes a color-keyed grille, moldings, and rear mudguards. Exterior colors include Black Sand Pearl, Impulse Red, Indigo Ink Pearl, Mystic Teal Mica, Sandrift Metallica, Silverstream Opal, Super White, and Woodland Pearl.

Interior

The Corolla seats five. Although not exactly comfortably since the interior feels a bit cramped. Other than the close quarters though the cloth-upholstered seats are not bad. The unusual thing about the 2002 Toyota Corolla concerns the list of standard equipment. It remains minimal. If you want air-conditioning, power windows, power locks, or a cassette player, you must order them as options. The Corolla LE provides the only model that gets the cassette player as standard equipment along with the split-folding rear seat, rear window defogger, and tilt steering wheel.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Toyota Corolla contains a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that doles out 125 horsepower when paired with any of the transmissions. Toyota offers three transmissions to choose from: a standard five-speed manual, a four-speed automatic, or a three-speed automatic that remains optional on the CE. The performance may not impress you but it proves more than adequate for normal driving needs. The Corolla remains quieter than many of its competitors and proves easy to drive and maneuver.

Safety

Toyota claims that the bumpers on the 2002 Toyota Corolla can withstand a five-mph collision with no damage. Many larger cars cannot match that. Other safety equipment falls in line with government standards. Side-impact airbags remain optional on all Corollas. Anti-lock brakes provide an option for the LE and S.
