2022 Toyota Highlander MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Available hybrid model
  • Good safety scores and driver-assist tech

Cons

  • Cramped third row
  • Insufficient low-end torque

The three-row SUV segment wouldn't be what it is today without the Highlander. First introduced for the 2001 model year, the current fourth-generation model went on sale for 2020. In every generation the Highlander has provided a flexible three-row interior with Toyota's value and dependability. That's made it an influencer among family-oriented crossovers and a best-seller in the Toyota lineup. As standard the Highlander seats eight, while a second-row captain's chair option reduces occupancy to seven. It's equipped with a V-6, although efficiency-conscious drivers might be interested in the four-cylinder Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

What We Think

The Highlander has shaped the three-row SUV segment over its two decades on sale, providing features that make it a hit with families. Thing is, its competitors have picked up on those—and made them better.

Ultimately, the Highlander serves its purpose as a versatile and easy-driving SUV. But its third row is so small that only young kids can fit, and when all the seats are upright cargo capacity is limited. For the driver, its bouncy ride quality and peaky power delivery aren't exactly inspiring. Still, it offers lots of standard features, excellent safety ratings, and Toyota's proven quality. Its high-end trim levels could give luxury-minded shoppers pause, too.

The 2022 three-row SUV segment is full of choices, and the Highlander places about mid-pack. There's nothing especially problematic about it, but drivers who want something less basic, more fun, or just cooler should look around. For anyone else, the Highlander is a safe bet, but we'd opt for the hybrid model.

Toyota Highlander Engine and Fuel Economy

The Highlander's standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Output measures 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque, with FWD standard and AWD optional. The MotorTrend test team measured 0-60 mph times between 7.2 and 7.4 seconds from AWD-equipped Highlanders. The EPA rates the Highlander's fuel economy at 21/29 mpg city/highway for most FWD trims, and 20/27 mpg for AWD models.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers the utility of a three-row SUV with impressive fuel economy. Read more about it here.

Safety

In NHTSA testing, the 2021 Highlander earned a five-star overall safety rating, the best possible score. The IIHS gave 2020 Top Safety Pick + designation to Highlander models equipped with the available curve-adaptive LED headlights. Regardless of headlights, the Highlander earned the highest score of Good in all six crashworthiness tests.

All Highlander models are equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+), a suite of driver-assist and active safety features. Front automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, emergency steering assist, road sign recognition, and automatic high-beams are all included in TSS 2.5+.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Cargo capacity measures 16.0 cubic feet behind the Highlander's third-row seat. With the third row folded, capacity increases to 48.4 cubic feet. Maximum cargo capacity with the third and second rows folded is 84.3 cubic feet.

The Highlander is equipped as an eight-seat SUV as standard, or a seven-seater with the available second-row captain's chairs. Front-row headroom measures 39.9 inches, which compares to 40.7 inches in the Ford Explorer. Second-row headroom is 39.4 inches in the Highlander, less than the Explorer's 40.5 inches. Third-row headroom is 36.1 inches in the Highlander, quite a bit less than the Explorer's 38.9 inches.

Front-row legroom measures 40.4 inches in the Highlander, not as much as the Explorer's 43.0 inches. However, the Highlander has an advantage in second-row legroom, with 41.0 inches to the Explorer's 39.0. Third-row legroom is tighter in the Toyota, which has just 27.7 inches against the Ford's 33.2.

Technology

Entry-level Highlander trims are equipped with an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and 4.2-inch gauge cluster display. Higher-end trims feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 7.0-inch gauge display. All include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability; built-in navigation is available. All except the L trim have five USB ports throughout the cabin, while some models are equipped with a wireless charging pad in the front row. A digital rearview mirror, head-up display, and 11-speaker JBL audio system are among the Highlander's technology options.
