2004 Toyota Sienna Review

Sienna shines with this classy carriage of passengers aplenty.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

Toyota does a superb job of putting together the redesigned 2004 Toyota Sienna. The Sienna surpasses the previous minivan designs to take the lead as the new class leader. This vehicle feels spacious and seats between seven and eight passengers comfortably. With folding or removable seats, it offers ample cargo space.

Smoothly sliding side doors allow for quick loading and unloading of people. This van proves excellent for long trips, maintaining a high level of comfort for everyone inside. Ten cup holders and lots of alcoves and nooks means that snacks and drinks are always at hand. An optional DVD system can keep the back seats entertained for hours. The Sienna definitely provides a family friendly van that’s a pleasure to drive and to ride in.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door minivan
Engines: 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Toyota Sienna CE seven-passenger, Toyota Sienna CE eight-passenger, Toyota Sienna LE seven-passenger, Toyota Sienna LE eight-passenger, Toyota Sienna XLE seven-passenger, Toyota Sienna XLE Limited seven-passenger

What's New

Remodeled, the 2004 Toyota Sienna features much more room than before. The third row of seats folds flat allowing for maximum cargo. This minivan seats up to seven or eight depending on the configuration for the lower trim levels, but Toyota only offers seven-passenger versions of the XLE and XLE Limited. The Toyota Sienna also sees an increase in power from previous years and the addition of all-wheel drive.

Exterior

A lot of effort went into redesigning this minivan for 2004. After considerable test-driving, the size of the 2004 Toyota Sienna increases and the wheelbase extends. For a minivan, the Sienna looks surprisingly streamlined. It has an aerodynamic feel, which helps reduce wind noise while driving.

The sliding doors open easily and allow for quick exit or entry of the van.

Interior

All models of the Sienna come packed full of standard features. Power windows, locks, and doors come standard. A keyless remote comes standard and an engine immobilizer can be added. A CD player with six speakers as well as dual air-conditioning adds to the standard features for all models. Plenty of cup holders convenience everyone in any seat, and the 2004 Toyota Sienna includes three auxiliary power outlets.

The third-row seats fold down to allow for extra room. The second row consists of removable captain’s chairs for the seven-passenger model or bench seats for the eight-passenger model. Between the front or second row seats a console can be placed or moved, with the option of having a console in both locations.

Performance & Handling

This minivan sports a V-6 engine that has been tweaked for greater power, resulting in 230 horsepower when coupled with the five-speed automatic transmission. This gives the 2004 Toyota Sienna a surprisingly smooth ride and quick acceleration. The fuel economy seems quite decent for a van and the handling proves excellent. The Sienna strikes an amazing balance in the way it handles. Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control and Brake Assist remain optional. Vehicle Stability Control helps the driver maintain control of the van by guiding the brakes during unfriendly conditions. The Traction Control system helps the van keep proper traction during acceleration. Brake Assist can be useful when the driver has difficulty maintaining pressure on the brakes in an emergency.

Safety

Each model of the 2004 Toyota Sienna comes with four-wheel anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution. Brake assist also aids in controlling the Sienna when making rapid stops. This minivan features a warning beep when backing up, which seems helpful during the day but might not be considerate late at night. A back-up camera can also be installed to help eliminate any blind spots. Parking assist provides a fun feature for the XLE Limited. It sounds different tones when it detects objects close to the front or back of the van.

Side-impact airbags come standard for the front seats. The XLE Limited comes with standard side-curtain airbags that protect all three rows of seats. Unfortunately, side-curtain airbags remain optional for the other models.
