2005 Toyota Sienna Review

Innovative, family-friendly, versatile transportation.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The second-generation Toyota Sienna minivan was introduced in 2004. The redesigned Sienna boasts increased power over previous generations and offers either front- or all-wheel drive. An all-new chassis has a wheelbase five inches longer than previous models, as well as four-inch wider front and rear tracks, yet tightens the turning radius by more than three feet. It is available in four trim levels: CE, LE, XLE, and top-of-the-line XLE Limited. All-wheel drive (AWD) is available on the three upper-end models. The XLE and XLE Limited models gain a standard power front passenger seat. CE and LE minivans are available in both seven- and eight-passenger configurations, and disabled motorists can purchase an IMS Sienna Rampvan.

The Range

Body style: minivan
Engines: 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Toyota Sienna CE, Toyota Sienna LE, Toyota Sienna XLE, Toyota Sienna XLE Limited

What's New

The Toyota Sienna was completely redesigned in 2004, so the 2005 model carries over with only the addition of a power-adjustable front passenger seat in the XLE and XLE Limited models.

Exterior

Everything about the 2005 Toyota Sienna is big and bold: large headlamps and tail lamps give the Sienna presence, and black window pillars make the Sienna look even larger than its dimensions suggest. Even the windshield, wipers, and washer nozzles are big. Still, it presents a sleek appearance with a steeply-raked windshield and black doorposts. The slot for the sliding doors is cleverly hidden to keep the look clean. It is built on a 119.3-inch wheelbase and measures 200 inches long overall. Standing 68.9 inches tall, it rides on standard 16-inch wheels, or 17-inch on the XLE Limited and all AWD models.

Interior

The 2005 Toyota Sienna comes standard with a 60/40 Split & Stow third-row bench seat, power windows, door locks and mirrors, sliding doors on both sides with power windows, keyless entry, AM/FM/cassette/CD with six speakers, dual-zone air-conditioning with rotary dial controls, captain's chairs for the first and second rows (for seven-passenger capability), a folding tray table between the front seats, tilt/telescopic steering column, black lacquered interior trim, tire pressure warning system, 10 cup holders, four bottle holders, and three 12-volt power outlets. High Solar Energy-Absorbing (HSEA) glass on the windshield and front side windows helps reduce cabin temperature. An eight-passenger CE is also available.

The popular 2005 Toyota Sienna LE comes with upgraded cloth fabric, upgraded trim, audio controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, manual adjustable lumbar support for the driver’s seat, and a fold-flat front passenger seat. A seven-passenger LE is available with AWD. The XLE is more luxurious with another level of upgraded fabric, tri-zone climate control with air filtration, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat and six-way power passenger seat, a premium JBL Synthesis audio system, leather-wrapped steering wheel and wood grain trim. The top-of-the-line XLE Limited adds leather-trimmed seats and other luxury features. Dynamic Laser Cruise Control, a wood grain and leather steering wheel, six-disc CD changer, heated front seats, and second- and third-row sunshades are standard on the XLE Limited.

Performance & Handling

A smooth ride and responsive handling set the 2005 Toyota Sienna apart from previous-generation models. It can be driven quickly without risking excessive body roll when cornering. A tight turning radius makes it easy to maneuver in parking lots and cramped city streets. A 3.3-liter V-6 engine with two-stage variable-valve setup powers all models. According to Toyota, it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds.

Safety

The 2005 Toyota Sienna comes with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and emergency brake assist that are standard for all models, and the XLE Limited models equipped with all-wheel drive have all-disc brakes. Vehicle Stability Control with traction control is available. Side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seats are standard in the XLE Limited and optional in the LE and XLE. Shifting into reverse turns on an outside warning beeper, and models with the navigation system also feature a camera that switches on whenever it is shifted into reverse, displaying a moving picture of what's behind. The top-of-the-line XLE Limited features a park-assist system that sounds a tone inside the vehicle when backing up or pulling forward toward close objects.
