2006 Toyota Sienna Review

A luxury family hauler.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

During its move to pass others in 2004, the Toyota Sienna emerged with larger and more powerful refinement than others in the segment. Along with the redesign, many key features were added that makes it a truly family-friendly minivan. One of the very best improvements comes with the third-row seat that folds flat for an utmost advantage over other minivans. There are several storage compartments, cup holders, and cargo hooks to efficiently store and carry most items. The 2006 Toyota Sienna is a clear front runner in its category.

The Range

Body Styles: Minivan
Engines: 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Sienna CE, Sienna LE, Sienna XLE, Sienna XLE Limited

What's New

The 2006 Toyota Sienna receives more standard equipment for luxury and safety. The addition of side-impact front airbags and the head-protecting three-row side curtain airbags are now standard. Some other changes include new seat fabric on the LE and CE models, and Optitron gauges on the XLE Limited, XLE, and LE models. The XLE Limited has driver-seat memory, and the XLE has the dual-power front seats. A new power-operated folding rear seat is on the 2WD XLE Limited models. There is a new tail lamp cluster, foglamps, headlamps, and new grille that are on all models. Revised testing procedures lowered the rating of horsepower to 215 from 230.

Exterior

The 2006 Toyota Sienna has four models: XLE Limited, XLE, LE and CE with seven seats or eight seats. The CE is the basic level with standard ABS and the LE has a roof rack, privacy glass, and heated power mirrors, which are all optional with the CE model. The XLE model adds alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, power-sliding doors, roof rack, and a power liftgate. The XLE Limited models upgrade to the larger alloy 17-inch wheels, moonroof, rear disc brakes, and rear window shades. The all-wheel-drive vehicles all have the 17-inch wheels, run-flat tires, and upgraded brakes.

Interior

The 2006 Toyota Sienna models have several interior standard features. The CE level has rear air-conditioning, telescoping steering wheel, CD player, keyless entry, and power windows on the dual-sliding doors. The LE model adds cruise control, driver lumbar adjustment, flat-folding front seat, and power mirrors. The XLE has automatic tri-zone climate control, removable center console, and power front seats. Finally, the XLE Limited models come standard with adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, park-assist system, CD changer, rear window shades, and leather upholstery. There is an optional addition of an entertainment center for the rear seats, third-row power-folding seats, and a navigation system.

The 2006 Toyota Sienna's interior features the highest quality fabric with the lower-level models and faux wood and leather on the higher levels. The storage space is very large with 149 cubic feet and the controls are easy to use. The captain’s chair seats in the second row can be pushed together to make a bench seat.

Performance & Handling

The 2006 Toyota Sienna utilizes the smooth benefits of a 3.3-liter V-6, which will produce 215 horsepower with an automatic five-speed transmission. The fuel economy is fair with this minivan at about 19/27 mpg city/highway for models with FWD and 18/24 mpg city/highway on the AWD models. The V-6 provides a powerful cruising ability while in the suburbs and when freeway merging. The sporty level of handling isn’t quite there, but the ride is superbly plush.

Safety

During government crash testing, the 2006 Toyota Sienna was awarded the highest rating of five stars for the side-impact protection and four stars for the frontal-impact protection. In the crash frontal offset test by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the 2006 Toyota Sienna received a high rating of ""good."" The minivan was also named ""Best Pick.""

Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes for all models; stability control and traction control are standard on the AWD models and the XLE Limited. There are standard airbag protection features that include curtain airbags for all of the three rows with front occupant side airbags that are seat-mounted.
