1996 Toyota Supra Review

A legendary sports coupe with potential.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1996 Toyota Supra is a high performance sports coupe built at a price more typical of midrange vehicles. It offers excellent performance and handling. In addition, it is also very stylish and attractive, making it look much more expensive. The interior features list is also fairly respectable. The main advantage and disadvantage is that it is an impractical sports car. On one hand, it is an impractical sports car. But on the other hand, it is a sports car that most drivers can actually afford.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe
Engines: 3.0-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual
Models: Toyota Supra

What's New

The 1996 Toyota Supra no longer offers manual drive turbocharged models.

Exterior

The sporty 1996 Toyota Supra has a sleek, graceful, rounded appearance that makes it distinct in the lineup. Measuring at 177.8 inches long, the 1996 Supra is a fairly average sized coupe. The wheelbase is 100.4 inches long. It comes standard with fog lights, power heated mirrors, lighted entry system, power antenna, rear window defroster, tinted glass, remote trunk release and 16-inch alloy wheels. A targa top and rear spoiler are available as optional features.

Interior

The 1996Toyota Supra are fairly robust with power heated mirrors, power windows, power locks, anti-theft alarm system, cruise control, leather trim, air-conditioning, automatic climate control, AM/FM radio, and a cassette player as standard equipment. Optional equipment include keyless entry system, leather seating, power seats, premium audio system, CD player, and a compact disc changer. The dash is ergonomically designed with the controls tilted towards the driver. The front seats are a bit stiff but comfortable and roomy enough. However, there is almost no leg room in the rear seats. It's not really suitable for adults or really anyone who doesn't want to sit with their knees in their chest.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Toyota Supra is a sports car that gives its driver everything a sports car enthusiast wants. Of course it offers excellent handling and performance. The 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission provides excellent acceleration for a vehicle in its price range, pumping out 220 hp at 5800 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque. Handling and cornering are also very good. It is very clearly designed to be fun to drive.

Safety

The 1996 Toyota Supra gets standard dual-front airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS). An anti-theft alarm system is optional.
