1996 Toyota T-100 Review

A rugged, reliable pickup truck built Toyota tough.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1996 Toyota T100 is a full-size pickup truck that features the rugged reliability so commonly found on Toyota vehicles. It provides good power and performance at a decent price, but lacks the upper-end model options that have more powerful engines, which is unlike some of its competitors. However, it's a good option in the realm of lighter duty full-size pickup trucks.

The 1996 Toyota T100 lacks any really major standout features compared to the competition. Looking at the specifications, some drivers might wonder what sets it apart from similarly priced and equipped vehicles. Its main advantage is that high quality and rugged build. Like many Toyota vehicles, it's a well-engineered machine. While it might lack flashy features and design, the basic components are very high quality. Toyota focused more on reliability and performance over superfluous features.

The Range

Body Styles: pickup truck
Engines: 2.7-liter four-cylinder, 3.4-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Toyota T100, Toyota T100 DX, Toyota T100 SR5

What's New

The 1996 Toyota T100 offers an optional Off Road Package on four-wheel drive models. Regular cabs don't come with cruise control as an option anymore, and a new red exterior paint is available with tan interior options.

Exterior

The 1996 Toyota T100 measures 209.1 inches long with a wheelbase of 121.8 inches, which is fairly typical for a full-size truck. It's available with a regular or extended cab, but there is no overlap between models, and as a result, the base model is only available with a regular cab. The DX and SR5 are only available with extended cabs. Optional equipment includes a camper towing package, bed liner, chrome step bumper, and tonneau cover.

Interior

The 1996 Toyota T100 lacks any significant interior features as standard equipment, which is not that unusual in a performance-oriented pickup truck. Optional features include a cassette player, CD player, AM/FM radio, cruise control, power windows, power locks, and air-conditioning.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Toyota T100 has solid performance and handling. The four-cylinder engine is a little underpowered but can get the job done, whereas the six-cylinder alterative gives adequate acceleration. However, eight-cylinder competitors outpace it significantly. The maneuverability and turning is adequate; it's not a difficult vehicle to drive, even without comparing it solely against other full-size trucks.

Safety

The 1996 Toyota T100 has dual front airbags as standard equipment, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes are available as optional equipment, except on the base model.

EPA Fuel Economy

Toyota Tacoma, 2.7-liter four-cylinder: 17/20 mpg city/highway
Toyota Tacoma, 3.4-liter six-cylinder: 15/19 mpg city/highway
